Rear Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair

Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Replacement

- Tool Required
- J 41172 Oil Seal Installer

Removal Procedure





1. Remove the transmission assembly.
2. Remove the clutch and pressure plate on manual transmission equipped vehicles.
3. Mark the flywheel-to-engine position.
4. Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft.

Important: To protect the crankshaft from damage, wrap the tip of the screwdriver with tape.

5. Carefully pry out the crankshaft rear oil seal using a screwdriver.

Installation Procedure





1. Apply GM P/N 1051344 Chassis Grease to the new crankshaft rear oil seal lip.

Important: The J41172 will install the seal to the correct installed depth. Other seal installers may not seat the seal properly and oil leakage may result.

2. Position the new seal in place over the end of the crankshaft.
3. Lightly tap the crankshaft rear oil seal into place using a hammer and the J 41172.
4. Install the flywheel.
5. Install the clutch and pressure plate on manual transmission equipped vehicles.
6. Install the transmission assembly.
