Engine Front Cover Replacement^ Tools Required
- J 22102 Front Cover Seal Installer
Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the battery negative cables from the batteries.
2. Drain the cooling system.
3. Remove the engine Oil fill tube from the front cover.
4. Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft.
5. Remove the water pump from the engine front cover.
6. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
7. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the engine front cover.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Remove the fuel injection drive gear from the fuel injection pump.
10. Remove the nuts retaining the injection pump to the engine front cover. The injection pump does not require removal.
Important: Mark the fuel line clips, so that they can be re-Installed on the proper stud.
11. Remove the bolts from the front of the engine front cover.
12. Remove the bolts retaining the Oil pan to the engine front cover.
13. Remove the engine front cover from the engine block.
14. Clean and inspect the sealing surface of the engine block.
Installation Procedure
1. Use the J 22102 to Install the new front crankshaft front Oil seal.
2. Apply a 2 mm (3/32 inch) bead of anaerobic sealant GM P/N 1052942 or equivalent to the engine front cover.
3. Apply a 5 mm (3/16 inch) bead of RTV sealant GM P/N 12346286 to the engine front cover sealing surface that mates against the oil pan.
4. Install the engine front cover to the engine block
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
5. Install the bolts retaining engine front cover to the engine block.
^ Tighten the front cover bolts to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).
6. Install the bolts retaining the Oil pan to the engine front cover.
^ Tighten the Oil pan bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
7. Install the nuts retaining the fuel injection pump to the front cover.
^ Tighten the nuts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
8. Install the fuel injection pump drive gear and bolts to the fuel injection pump.
^ Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
9. Install the crankshaft balancer to the crankshaft.
10. Raise the vehicle.
11. Install the crankshaft position sensor to the engine front cover.
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. Install the water pump to the engine block.
14. Fill the cooling system.
15. Install the engine Oil fill tube to the front cover.
16. Connect the battery negative cables to the batteries.
17. Perform the TDC offset adjustment.
