Oil Pan: Service and Repair
Oil Pan ReplacementRemoval Procedure
1. Disconnect the battery negative cables from the battery.
2. Remove the Oil level indicator and tube.
3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
4. If equipped with a 4L80E transmission, remove the flywheel from the vehicle.
5. Drain the engine Oil.
6. Remove the transmission oil cooler lines from the retainer.
7. Remove the oil pan from the engine block.
8. Remove the oil pan rear oil seal.
9. Clean the sealing surfaces for the Oil pan and the engine block.
Installation Procedure
1. Apply a 2 mm (1/16 inch) bead of RTV sealant GM P/N 12346286 to the oil pan rear seal at the inside corners where the seal meets the rear main bearing cap on the block.
2. Install the Oil pan rear seal to the rear main bearing cap before the sealer starts to dry.
3. Apply a 5 mm (3/16 inch) bead of RTV sealant GM P/N 12346286 to the oil pan sealing surface, inboard of the bolt holes. Install the pan before the sealer starts to dry.
4. Install the oil pan to the engine.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
5. Install the oil pan bolts.
^ Tighten all except the rear two bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
^ Tighten the rear two bolts to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
6. Install the Oil pan drain plug.
^ Tighten the Oil pan drain plug to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
7. If equipped with a 4L80E transmission, install the engine flywheel.
8. Install the transmission Oil cooler lines to the retainer.
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Install the engine Oil level indicator and tube.
11. Connect the battery negative cables to the batteries.
12. Change the engine Oil and Oil filter.
