CIRCUIT DESCRIPTIONThe Powertrain Control Module (PCM) provides ignition positive voltage to the coil side of the fuel pump relay. When the ignition switch is first turned ON, the PCM energizes the fuel pump relay, which applies power to the fuel pump. The PCM enables the fuel pump relay as long as the engine is cranking or running and crankshaft reference pulses are received. If no crankshaft reference pulses are received, the PCM de-energizes the fuel pump relay after 2 seconds. The PCM monitors the voltage on the fuel pump relay control circuit. If the PCM detects an incorrect voltage on the fuel pump relay control circuit, DTC P0230 sets.
CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING THE DTC
^ The engine speed is more than 400 RPM.
^ The ignition voltage is between 6-18 volts.
CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC
^ The PCM detects that the commanded state of the driver and the actual state of the control circuit do not match.
^ All the above conditions are present for a minimum of 2.5 seconds.
TEST DESCRIPTION
Steps 1-15:
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.
2. Listen for an audible click when the fuel pump relay operates. Command both the ON and OFF states. Repeat the commands as necessary.
4. This step verifies that the PCM is providing voltage to the fuel pump relay.
5. This step tests for an open in the ground circuit to the fuel pump relay.
6. This step tests if voltage is constantly being applied to the control circuit of the fuel pump relay.
