Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure





Caution: Refer to Exhaust Service Caution in Service Precautions.

Caution: Refer to Protective Goggles and Gloves Caution in Service Precautions.

Important: If removing only the left side catalytic converter, the right side catalytic converter does not require removal. If removing the right side catalytic converter both left and right catalytic converters need to be removed.

Left Side
1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle with jack stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Disconnect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (H02S) electrical connectors.





3. Loosen the catalytic converter clamp at the muffler.





4. Remove the catalytic converter nuts and exhaust seal.
5. Remove the left catalytic converter pipe.
6. If replacing the left catalytic converter, remove the H02S as necessary.

Right Side





1. Disconnect the H02S electrical connectors.





2. Remove the catalytic converter pipe nuts and gasket from the muffler.





3. Remove the catalytic converter nuts and exhaust seal.
4. Remove the right catalytic converter pipe.
5. If replacing the right catalytic converter, remove the H02S as necessary.

Installation Procedure
Right Side





1. If replacing the right catalytic converter, install the H02S as necessary.
2. Install the right catalytic converter pipe.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Install the right exhaust seal and catalytic converter nuts.
^ Tighten the catalytic converter pipe to exhaust manifold nuts to 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.).





4. Install the right catalytic converter pipe gasket and nuts to the muffler.
^ Tighten the catalytic converter to the muffler nuts to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).





5. Connect the H02S electrical connector.

Left Side





1. If replacing the left catalytic converter, install the H02S as necessary.
2. Install the left catalytic converter pipe.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Install the left exhaust seal and catalytic converter nuts.
^ Tighten the catalytic converter pipe to exhaust manifold nuts to 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.).





4. Tighten the catalytic converter clamp at the muffler.
^ Tighten the catalytic converter clamp to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.).





5. Connect the H02S electrical connectors.
6. Lower the vehicle.
