Inaccurate Fuel Gauge Reading (Reprogram PCM)

2001 Chevrolet Express
2001 GMC Savana
with 4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L or 8.1 L Vortec(TM) Engine (VINs W, M, R, G - RPOs L35, L30, L31, L18)
Built Prior to October, 2000 with 132 L (35 Gallon) Fuel Tank (RPO NL1)

This bulletin is being revised to provide additional information to the field on engine usage. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 01-06-04-030 (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).
Condition
Important:
This bulletin does NOT apply for diesel engines. A fuel sender buffer module assembly is used on a diesel engine. Reprogramming the PCM will not correct the fuel gauge issue.
Some customers may comment that the fuel gauge reads empty (E), or 1/4 of a tank when the tank is actually full (F).
Cause
Some vehicles built prior to October 2000 with 132 L (35 gal) fuel tanks may have incorrect fuel calibration software for gasoline engine only.
Correction
Reprogram the PCM with the latest calibrations if the above concern is encountered. An updated PCM calibration is now available to address this concern. This calibration, or any that follow, is designed to address this concern. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) using the appropriate Service Information (SI) procedures. The PCM calibrations are available to dealerships as part of TIS2000 incremental satellite update version 18, which was broadcast to dealers October 2000 or later. As always, make sure your Tech 2(R) is updated with the latest software version.
