Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

Brake Shoe Replacement

Removal Procedure





1. Install the pin into the park brake lever.
2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Remove the tire and the wheel assembly.
4. Remove the rear brake drum.
5. Remove the rear brake shoe return springs (7,8).
6. Remove the hold-down springs (9).
7. Remove the hold-down pins (15).
8. Remove the shoe guide (3).
9. Remove the rear brake shoe actuator (11) and the spring (10).
10. Remove the rear brake shoe actuator link (6).
11. Remove the rear parking brake lever strut (4) and spring (2).
12. Remove the rear brake shoe adjuster spring (13).
13. Remove the rear brake shoe adjuster (12).
14. Remove the rear brake shoes (1,14).
15. Inspect all of the parts for discoloration due to heat or stress. Replace as needed.
16. Inspect all of the parts for signs of wear. Replace as needed.
17. Inspect the rear brake cylinder for signs of leakage. If any is found, refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement.
18. Inspect the rear brake drum for scoring and machining tolerance.

Installation Procedure





1. Lubricate the rear brake backing plate and the adjusting screw threads with a thin coat of high temperature silicone brake lubricant.





2. Install the rear brake shoes (1,14).
3. Install the rear brake shoe adjuster (12).

Important: Do not interchange the right and left brake shoe adjusting screws.

4. Install the rear brake shoe adjuster spring (13). The coils of the adjusting screw spring must not touch the adjusting screw.
5. Install the rear park brake lever strut (4) and spring (2).
6. Install the rear brake shoe actuator link (6).
7. Instal the rear brake shoe actuator (11) and spring (10).
8. Install the shoe guide (3).
9. Install the hold-down pins (15).
10. Install the hold-down springs (9).
11. Install the rear brake shoe return springs (7,8).
12. Install the rear brake drum to the vehicle.
13. Remove the pin to the park brake lever.
14. Install the tire and the wheel assembly.
15. Adjust the rear brakes.
16. Adjust the park brake.
17. Lower the vehicle.
18. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal approximately 2/3 of it's travel distance.
19. Slowly release the brake pedal.
20. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 18-19 until a firm brake pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the wheel cylinders and brake shoes.
