Instrument Panel (IP) - Removal Procedure

IMPORTANT: If you are removing the instrument panel in order to gain access to other components, you may remove the instrument panel as a complete assembly. Refer to the Instrument Panel Removal Procedure below. If you are replacing the instrument panel, continue with this procedure.

CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.




1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

CAUTION: Refer to Restraint Systems Handling Caution in Cautions and Notices.

2. Disable the Restraint Systems. Refer to Disabling the Restraint Systems System in Restraint Systems.
3. Remove the IP compartment.
4. Remove the following components from the instrument panel (2):
4.1. The 3 screws (3)
4.2. The IP compartment trim plate (1)




5. Remove the inflatable restraint IP module.
6. Remove the front floor console.
7. Remove the ashtray lamp bulb.
8. Remove the radio.
9. Remove the cigar lighter.
10. Remove the instrument cluster.
11. Using a taped flat bladed tool, gently pry the 2 IP accessory trim plate switch hole covers (2) located below the hazard and defogger switches from the instrument panel.
12. Using a taped flat bladed tool, gently pry the hazard warning switch (1) from the instrument panel.




13. Disconnect the hazard warning switch electrical connector (2).
14. Remove the switch (1) from the vehicle.




15. Using a taped flat bladed tool, gently pry the rear window defogger switch (1) from the instrument panel, if equipped.




16. Disconnect the rear window defogger switch electrical connector (2), if equipped.
17. Remove the switch (1) from the vehicle, if equipped.
18. Remove the heater control unit.
19. Remove the IP lamp dimmer control.
20. Remove the cruise control switch, if equipped.
21. Remove the outside remote control rearview mirror switch, if equipped.
22. Remove the rear window wiper/washer switch, if equipped.
23. Using a taped flat bladed tool, gently pry and remove the IP accessory trim plate switch hole covers located next to the switches at the left of the instrument panel.




24. Remove the following components from the vehicle:
24.1. The 8 bolts (1 and 4)
24.2. The IP drivers knee bolster panels (2 and 3)
25. Remove the steering column.




26. Remove the screw (2) which secures the hood latch release handle (1) to the instrument panel (3).
27. Position the hood latch release handle (1) aside in order to gain the necessary clearance to remove the instrument panel (3).
28. Gently pry loose and remove the windshield side garnish moldings.
29. Disconnect the 6 IP wiring harness electrical connectors from the junction block.
30. Disconnect the radio antenna cable lead from the extension cable in the junction block area.
31. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) from the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) electrical connector.
32. Disconnect the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) electrical connector.
33. Remove the bolt which secures the IP wiring harness ground wire. The bolt and ground wire are located to the left front of the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).
34. Remove the ambient light sensor.




35. Remove the 2 bolts (3,6) which secure the instrument panel (2) at each side.
36. Fold back the floor panel carpet around the center of the instrument panel (2) in order to access the 2 center IP mounting bolts (4) at each side.
37. Remove the 2 center IP mounting bolts (4) which secure the instrument panel (2) at each side.




38. Remove the bolt (2) located in the steering column area which secures the instrument panel (1).




39. Remove the left upper IP bolt trim cover (1) from the instrument panel (2).




40. Remove the right upper IP bolt trim cover (1) from the instrument panel (2).




41. Remove the 2 upper IP mounting bolts (1) which secure the instrument panel (2).
42. Remove the instrument panel (2) from the vehicle.




43. Remove the following components from the instrument panel:
43.1. The screw (2)
43.2. The air distribution center duct (1)




44. Remove the following components from the instrument panel:
44.1. The 4 screws (1)
44.2. The windshield defroster outlet duct (2)
44.3. The heater duct




45. Remove the screw (3) from the left side of the rear of the instrument panel (1) which secures the P wiring harness (2).




46. Remove the 2 screws (1) from the center of the rear of the instrument panel (3) which secure the P wiring harness (2).




47. Remove the screw (3) from the right side of the rear of the instrument panel (1) which secures the IP wiring harness (2).




48. Release the wiring harness retainers and remove the IP wiring harness (2) from the IP reinforcement (1).




49. Remove the following components from the instrument panel:
49.1. The 10 screws
49.2. The 4 bolts
49.3. The IP reinforcement
49.4. The left windshield defroster nozzle air deflector (3)
49.5. The 3 screws
49.6. The right windshield defroster nozzle air deflector
49.7. The 2 screws
49.8. The IP compartment door reinforcement (1)




50. Remove the following components from the instrument panel (3):
50.1. The 4 screws (2)
50.2. The IP passengers knee bolster panel (1)




51. Remove the left vent outlet deflector (2) from the instrument panel.




52. Remove the following components from the instrument panel (1):
52.1. The 3 screws
52.2. The center IP bracket (2)




53. Remove the following components from the instrument panel (3):
53.1. The 2 screws (2)
53.2. The left P bracket (1)
