Instrument Panel Carrier Replacement

Instrument Panel Replacement Removal Procedure

Important: If you are removing the instrument panel in order to gain access to other components, you may remove the instrument panel as a complete assembly. Refer to the Instrument Panel Removal Procedure below. If you are replacing the instrument panel, continue with this procedure.







Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in Cautions and Notices.
2. Disable the SIR. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.
3. Remove the IP compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Replacement (Instrument Panel Compartment - Replacement) .
4. Remove the following components from the instrument panel (2):

1. The 3 screws (3)
2. The IP compartment trim plate (1)





5. Remove the inflatable restraint IP module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement.
6. Remove the front floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement (Front Floor Console Replacement) .
7. Remove the ashtray lamp bulb. Refer to Ashtray Lamp Bulb Replacement.
8. Remove the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement.
9. Remove the cigar lighter. Refer to Cigar Lighter Housing Replacement Service and Repair
10. Remove the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement (Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) - Replacement) .
11. Using a taped flat bladed tool, gently pry the 2 IP accessory trim plate switch hole covers (2) located below the hazard and defogger switches from the instrument panel.
12. Using a taped flat bladed tool, gently pry the hazard warning switch (1) from the instrument panel.




13. Disconnect the hazard warning switch electrical connector (2).
14. Remove the switch (1) from the vehicle.




15. Using a taped flat bladed tool, gently pry the rear window defogger switch (1) from the instrument panel, if equipped.




16. Disconnect the rear window defogger switch electrical connector (2), if equipped.
17. Remove the switch (1) from the vehicle, if equipped.
18. Remove the heater control unit. Refer to Control Assembly Replacement in Heating and Ventilation (Non A/C) or HVAC Systems with A/C - Manual.
19. Remove the IP lamp dimmer control. Refer to Instrument Panel Lamp Dimmer Switch Replacement.
20. Remove the cruise control switch, if equipped. Refer to Cruise Control Switch Replacement.
21. Remove the outside remote control rearview mirror switch, if equipped. Refer to Power Mirror Switch Replacement Service and Repair
22. Remove the rear window wiper/washer switch, if equipped. Refer to Rear Window Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement.
23. Using a taped flat bladed tool, gently pry and remove the IP accessory trim plate switch hole covers located next to the switches at the left of the instrument panel.




24. Remove the following components from the vehicle:

1. The 8 bolts (1 and 4)
2. The IP drivers knee bolster panels (2 and 3)

25. Remove the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement.




26. Remove the screw (2) which secures the hood latch release handle (1) to the instrument panel (3).
27. Position the hood latch release handle (1) aside in order to gain the necessary clearance to remove the instrument panel (3).
28. Gently pry loose and remove the windshield side garnish moldings.
29. Disconnect the 6 IP wiring harness electrical connectors from the junction block.
30. Disconnect the radio antenna cable lead from the extension cable in the junction block area.
31. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) from the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) electrical connector.
32. Disconnect the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) electrical connector.
33. Remove the bolt which secures the IP wiring harness ground wire. The bolt and ground wire are located to the left front of the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).
34. Remove the ambient light sensor. Refer to Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) Ambient Light Sensor Replacement.




35. Remove the 2 bolts (3,6) which secure the instrument panel (2) at each side.
36. Fold back the floor panel carpet around the center of the instrument panel (2) in order to access the 2 center IP mounting bolts (4) at each side.
37. Remove the 2 center IP mounting bolts (4) which secure the instrument panel (2) at each side.




38. Remove the bolt (2) located in the steering column area which secures the instrument panel (1).




39. Remove the left upper IP bolt trim cover (1) from the instrument panel (2).




40. Remove the right upper IP bolt trim cover (1) from the instrument panel (2).




41. Remove the 2 upper IP mounting bolts (1) which secure the instrument panel (2).
42. Remove the instrument panel (2) from the vehicle.




43. Remove the following components from the instrument panel:

1. The screw (2)
2. The air distribution center duct (1)





44. Remove the following components from the instrument panel:

1. The 4 screws (1)
2. The windshield defroster outlet duct (2)
3. The heater duct





45. Remove the screw (3) from the left side of the rear of the instrument panel (1) which secures the IP wiring harness (2).




46. Remove the 2 screws (1) from the center of the rear of the instrument panel (3) which secure the IP wiring harness (2).




47. Remove the screw (3) from the right side of the rear of the instrument panel (1) which secures the IP wiring harness (2).




48. Release the wiring harness retainers and remove the IP wiring harness (2) from the IP reinforcement (1).




49. Remove the following components from the instrument panel:

1. The 10 screws
2. The 4 bolts
3. The IP reinforcement
4. The left windshield defroster nozzle air deflector (3)
5. The 3 screws
6. The right windshield defroster nozzle air deflector
7. The 2 screws
8. The IP compartment door reinforcement (1)





50. Remove the following components from the instrument panel (3):

1. The 4 screws (2)
2. The IP passengers knee bolster panel (1)





51. Remove the left vent outlet deflector (2) from the instrument panel.




52. Remove the following components from the instrument panel (1):

1. The 3 screws
2. The center IP bracket (2)





53. Remove the following components from the instrument panel (3):

1. The 2 screws (2)
2. The left IP bracket (1)




Instrument Panel Replacement Installation Procedure





1. Install the left IP bracket (1) to the instrument panel (3). Secure the bracket with the 2 screws (2).




2. Install the center IP bracket (2) to the instrument panel (1). Secure the bracket with the 3 screws.




3. Install the left vent outlet deflector (2) to the instrument panel.




4. Install the IP passengers knee bolster panel (1) to the instrument panel (3). Secure the panel with the 4 screws (2).




5. Install the IP compartment door reinforcement (1) to the instrument panel. Secure the reinforcement with 2 screws.
6. Install the right windshield defroster nozzle air deflector to the instrument panel. Secure the air deflector with the 3 screws.
7. Install the left windshield defroster nozzle air deflector (3) to the instrument panel.
8. Install the IP reinforcement to the instrument panel. Secure the reinforcement with the following:

1. The 10 screws
2. The 4 bolts





9. Install the IP wiring harness (2) to the IP reinforcement (1). Secure the harness with the plastic retainers.




10. Install the screw (3) to the left side of the rear of the instrument panel (1) which secures the IP wiring harness (2).




11. Install the 2 screws (1) to the center of the rear of the instrument panel (3) which secure the IP wiring harness (2).




12. Install the screw (3) to the right side of the rear of the instrument panel (1) which secures the IP wiring harness (2).




13. Install the heater duct to the instrument panel.
14. Install the windshield defroster outlet duct (2) to the instrument panel. Secure the outlet duct with the 4 screws (1).




15. Install the air distribution center duct (1) to the instrument panel. Secure the center duct with the screw (2).




16. Install the instrument panel (2) to the vehicle. Secure the IP with the 2 upper IP mounting bolts (1). Do not tighten fully.




17. Install the bolt (2) located in the steering column area which secures the instrument panel (1). Do not tighten fully.




18. Install the 2 center IP mounting bolts (4) which secure the instrument panel (2) at each side. Do not tighten fully.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

19. Install the 2 bolts (3,6) which secure the instrument panel (2) at each side.

Tighten all of the instrument panel mounting bolts to 23 N.m (17 lb ft).

20. Reposition the floor panel carpet around the center of the instrument panel (2).
21. Install the left upper IP bolt trim cover to the instrument panel.
22. Install the right upper IP bolt trim cover to the instrument panel.
23. Install the ambient light sensor. Refer to Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) Ambient Light Sensor Replacement.




24. Install the bolt which secures the IP wiring harness ground wire. The bolt and ground wire are located to the left front of the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).
25. Connect the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) electrical connector. Secure the connector with the connector position assurance (CPA).
26. Connect the radio antenna cable lead to the extension cable in the junction block area.
27. Connect the 6 IP wiring harness electrical connectors to the junction block.
28. Install the windshield side garnish moldings.
29. Install the hood latch release handle (1) to the instrument panel (3). Secure the handle with the screw (2).




30. Install the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement or Steering Column Replacement.
31. Install the IP drivers knee bolster panels (2 and 3) to the vehicle. Secure the bolster panels with the 8 bolts (1 and 4).




32. Install the IP lamp dimmer control. Refer to Instrument Panel Lamp Dimmer Switch Replacement.
33. Install the outside remote control rearview mirror switch, if equipped. Refer to Power Mirror Switch Replacement Service and Repair
34. Install the cruise control switch, if equipped. Refer to Cruise Control Switch Replacement.
35. Install the rear window wiper/washer switch, if equipped. Refer to Rear Window Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement.
36. Install the IP accessory trim plate switch hole covers located next to the switches at the left of the instrument panel.
37. Install the heater control unit. Refer to Control Assembly Replacement in Heating and Ventilation (Non A/C) or HVAC Systems with A/C - Manual.
38. Connect the rear window defogger switch electrical connector (2), if equipped.
39. Install the rear window defogger switch (1) to the instrument panel, if equipped. Ensure that the retaining tabs are fully engaged.




40. Connect the hazard warning switch electrical connector (2).
41. Install the hazard warning switch (1) to the instrument panel. Ensure that the retaining tabs are fully engaged.
42. Install the 2 IP accessory trim plate switch hole covers located below the hazard and defogger switches to the instrument panel.
43. Install the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement (Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) - Replacement) .
44. Install the cigar lighter. Refer to Cigar Lighter Housing Replacement Service and Repair
45. Install the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement.
46. Install the ashtray lamp bulb. Refer to Ashtray Lamp Bulb Replacement.
47. Install the front floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement (Front Floor Console Replacement) .
48. Install the inflatable restraint IP module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement.




49. Install the IP compartment trim plate (1) to the instrument panel (2). Secure the trim plate with the 3 screws (3).
50. Install the IP compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Replacement (Instrument Panel Compartment - Replacement) .
51. Enable the SIR System. Refer to Enabling the SIR System.
52. Connect the negative battery cable.



Instrument Panel Removal Procedure





Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in Cautions and Notices.
2. Disable the SIR System. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.
3. Remove the front floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement (Front Floor Console Replacement) .
4. Remove the IP compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Replacement (Instrument Panel Compartment - Replacement) .
5. Remove the IP steering column opening trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Trim Panel Replacement - Left Side (Instrument Panel (IP) - Trim Panel Replacement - Left) .
6. Remove the mode control cable (3) at the heater case.




7. Remove the temperature control cable (1) at the heater case (2).




8. Remove the fresh/recirc control cable (1) at the blower case (3).
9. Remove the inflatable restraint IP module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement.
10. Remove the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement.




11. Remove the screw (2) which secures the hood latch release handle (1) to the instrument panel (3).
12. Position the hood latch release handle (1) aside in order to gain the necessary clearance to remove the instrument panel (3).
13. Gently pry loose and remove the windshield side garnish moldings.
14. Disconnect the 6 IP wiring harness electrical connectors from the junction block.
15. Disconnect the radio antenna cable lead from the extension cable in the junction block area.
16. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) from the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) electrical connector.
17. Disconnect the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) electrical connector.
18. Remove the bolt which secures the IP wiring harness ground wire. The bolt and ground wire are located to the left front of the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).
19. Remove the ambient light sensor. Refer to Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) Ambient Light Sensor Replacement.




20. Remove the 2 bolts (3,6) which secure the instrument panel (2) at each side.
21. Fold back the floor panel carpet around the center of the instrument panel (2) in order to access the 2 center IP mounting bolts (4) at each side.
22. Remove the 2 center IP mounting bolts (4) which secure the instrument panel (2) at each side.




23. Remove the bolt (2) located in the steering column area which secures the instrument panel (1).




24. Remove the left upper IP bolt trim cover (1) from the instrument panel (2).




25. Remove the right upper IP bolt trim cover (1) from the instrument panel (2).




26. Remove the 2 upper IP mounting bolts (1) which secure the instrument panel (2).
27. Remove the instrument panel (2) from the vehicle.



Instrument Panel Installation Procedure





1. Install the instrument panel (2) to the vehicle. Secure the IP with the 2 upper IP mounting bolts (1). Do not tighten fully.




2. Install the bolt (2) located in the steering column area which secures the instrument panel (1). Do not tighten fully.




3. Install the 2 center IP mounting bolts (4) which secure the instrument panel (2) at each side. Do not tighten fully.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

4. Install the 2 bolts (3,6) which secure the instrument panel (2) at each side.

Tighten all of the instrument panel mounting bolts to 23 N.m (17 lb ft).

5. Reposition the floor panel carpet around the center of the instrument panel (2).
6. Install the left upper IP bolt trim cover to the instrument panel.
7. Install the right upper IP bolt trim cover to the instrument panel.




8. Install the ambient light sensor. Refer to Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) Ambient Light Sensor Replacement.
9. Install the bolt which secures the IP wiring harness ground wire. The bolt and ground wire are located to the left front of the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).
10. Connect the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) electrical connector. Secure the connector with the connector position assurance (CPA).
11. Connect the radio antenna cable lead to the extension cable in the junction block area.
12. Connect the 6 IP wiring harness electrical connectors to the junction block.
13. Install the windshield side garnish moldings.
14. Install the hood latch release handle (1) to the instrument panel (3). Secure the handle with the screw (2).




15. Install the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement.
16. Install the inflatable restraint IP module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement.
17. Install the fresh/recirc control cable (1) at the blower case (3).




18. Install the temperature control cable (1) at the heater case (2).




19. Install the mode control cable (3) at the heater case.
20. Adjust the heater control cables as necessary. Refer to the following:

* Temperature Control Cable Adjustment
* Mode Control Cable Adjustment
* Vent Control Cable Adjustment

21. Install the IP steering column opening trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Trim Panel Replacement - Left Side (Instrument Panel (IP) - Trim Panel Replacement - Left) .
22. Install the IP compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Replacement (Instrument Panel Compartment - Replacement) .
23. Install the front floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement (Front Floor Console Replacement) .
24. Enable the SIR System. Refer to Enabling the SIR System.
25. Connect the negative battery cable.
