Harmonic Balancer - Crankshaft Pulley: Service and Repair



^ Tools Required
- J 24420-C Crankshaft Pulley Hub Puller
- J 29113 Crankshaft Pulley Hub Installer

Removal Procedure





1. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.

Important: If only replacing the crankshaft pulley, do not remove the fan shroud and the engine cooling fan.

2. Remove the fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Cooling System.
3. Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Cooling System.
4. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
5. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolts.
6. Remove the hub bolt and washer from the crankshaft pulley.
7. Remove the crankshaft pulley.





Notice: To prevent damage to the end of the crankshaft when using a crankshaft balancer removal tool install a bolt in the crankshaft. Use a shorter bolt with the same threads as the crankshaft balancer bolt. This bolt will allow a place for the tool to push against. The shorter bolt is to keep from going past the threads in the crankshaft and damaging the crankshaft threads.

8. Position the J 24420-C puller tool onto the crankshaft hub.





9. Turn the center puller screw clockwise in order to remove the hub from the crankshaft.
10. Inspect the crankshaft hub for damage. Replace if necessary.
11. Remove the key from the crankshaft.
12. Inspect the crankshaft key for damage. Replace if necessary.

Installation Procedure





1. Coat the engine front cover seal contact area with engine oil.





2. Apply RTV sealer GM P/N 1052917 to the keyway on the crankshaft.
3. Install the key into the keyway on the crankshaft.





4. Install the pulley hub into position over the key on the crankshaft.





5. Install the J 29113 through the hub and into the crankshaft so that at least 6 mm (0.24 inch) of threads are engaged.
6. Pull the crankshaft pulley hub into position against the J 29113.
7. Remove the J 29113 from the crankshaft.
8. Make sure that the hub is seated against the crankshaft.





9. Position the crankshaft pulley over the crankshaft pulley hub.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

10. Install the crankshaft pulley bolts and the hub bolt and washer.

^ Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the crankshaft pulley to hub bolt to 105 Nm (77 ft. lbs.).

11. Lower the vehicle.
12. Install the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Cooling System.
13. Install the fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Cooling System.
14. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
