Camshaft Replacement


Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement.
2. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System.
3. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Cooling System.
4. Remove the A/C condenser, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
5. Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement.
6. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement.
7. Remove the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Removal.
8. Rotate the crankshaft until the number 1 piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke.
9. Remove the oil pump drive. Refer to Oil Pump Drive Replacement.
10. Remove the camshaft position sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Replacement.
11. Remove the camshaft sprocket and the camshaft timing chain. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprockets Removal.
12. Remove the camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Removal.
13. Inspect the camshaft for wear or damage. Refer to Camshaft and Bearings Clean and Inspect.

Installation Procedure

Important: If installing a new camshaft, change the engine oil and the oil filter.

1. Install the camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Installation.
2. Install the camshaft position sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Replacement.
3. Install the crankshaft sprocket and camshaft timing chain. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprockets Installation.
4. Install the oil pump drive. Refer to Oil Pump Drive Replacement.
5. Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement.
6. Install the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Installation.
7. Install the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement.
8. Install the air conditioning condenser, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
9. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Cooling System.
10. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement.
