Water Pump: Service and Repair
Removal Procedure
1. Remove the coolant from the radiator. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System.
2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
3. Remove upper fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement.
4. Remove the upper radiator hose.
5. Remove the fan clutch assembly. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement.
6. Remove the water pump drive pulley bolts.
7. Remove the water pump drive pulley
8. Remove the water pump mounting bolts.
9. Remove the water pump.
10. Remove the water pump gasket.
11. Inspect, to make sure all parts are free of burs or other imperfections, replace as necessary.
12. Clean all of the mating surfaces.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the water pump gasket to the engine.
2. Install the water pump to the engine.
3. Apply a sealer (GM P/N 12346004) to the bolt threads.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
4. Install the water pump mounting bolts.
^ Tighten the water pump mounting bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the water pump drive pulley.
6. Install the water pump drive pulley bolts.
^ Tighten the water pump drive pulley bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
7. Install the cooling fan and clutch assembly. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement.
8. Install the belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
9. Install the upper fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement.
10. Install the upper radiator hose.
11. Fill the radiator with the specified coolant and concentration. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System.
12. Inspect the cooling system for leaks. Refer to Cooling System Leak Testing (On-Vehicle) or Cooling System Leak Testing (Off-Vehicle).
