Brake Shoe: Service and Repair
Use GM replacement brake lining material for this vehicle. GM replacement brake parts provide the proper brake balance for stopping distance and for braking control. The intended brake balance for this vehicle can change if GM replacement brake lining materials are not used.
Removal Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
3. Mark the relationship of the brake drum to the axle hub.
Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in Service Precautions.
4. Remove the brake drum from the axle.
5. Remove the brake shoe return springs.
6. Remove the brake shoe guide and the actuator link.
7. Remove two hold down springs.
8. Remove two hold down pins.
9. Remove the actuator lever and the actuator lever pivot.
10. Remove the actuator lever return spring.
11. Remove the park brake strut and the strut spring.
12. Remove the park brake lever.
13. Remove the brake shoes.
14. Remove the adjusting screw assembly and the adjusting screw spring from the brake shoes.
15. Inspect all parts for discoloration due to heat or stress. Replace parts as needed.
16. Replace all worn parts.
17. Inspect the wheel cylinder for signs of leakage. If you find signs of leakage, refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement
18. Inspect the brake drum for scoring and machining tolerance. Refer to Brake Drum Inspection.
Installation Procedure
1. Lubricate the brake shoe backing plate, the adjusting screw threads, socket, and socket face with a thin coat of GM P/N 1052196 or equivalent.
Important: Do not interchange the right and left adjusting screws.
2. Install the adjusting screw assembly and the adjusting screw spring on the brake shoes. The coils of the adjusting screw spring must not touch the adjusting screw.
3. Install the brake shoes on the backing plate.
4. Install the park brake lever.
5. Install the strut spring on the park brake strut.
6. Install the park brake strut.
7. Install the actuator lever and the lever pivot.
8. Install the actuator lever return spring.
9. Install two hold down pins.
10. Install two hold down springs.
11. Install the brake shoe guide and the actuator link.
12. Install the brake shoe return springs.
13. Install the brake drum. Align the marks made during disassembly.
14. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
15. Adjust the brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment.
16. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.
