Backing Plate: Service and Repair


Removal Procedure





1. Remove the brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement.
2. Remove the wheel cylinder. Refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement.
3. Remove the axle shaft. Refer to Axle Shaft Replacement in Rear Drive Axle.
4. Remove four bolts and washers.
5. Remove the backing plate.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the backing plate.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install four bolts and washers.
Tighten
Tighten the backing plate mounting bolts to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the axle shaft. Refer to Axle Shaft Replacement in Rear Drive Axle.
4. Install the wheel cylinder. Refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement.
5. Install the brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement.
6. Bleed the brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding in Hydraulic Brakes.
