Propeller Shaft Replacement - One Piece

Removal Procedure

1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.

Important: Do not rotate the center slip yokes to spline shafts, end yokes, companion flanges, etc. from their original position during reassembly. Refer to Propeller Shaft Description. You must observe and accurately reference mark all driveline components relative to the propeller shaft and axles before disassembly. These components include the propeller shafts, drive axles, pinion flanges, output shafts, etc. All components must be reassembled in the exact relationship as when removed. You must follow specifications and torque values, as well as any measurements made prior to disassembly, in order to maintain the factory balance.

2. Reference mark the propeller shaft to the pinion flange or the yoke connection.
3. Support the propeller shaft.

Important: Discard the bolts to the companion flange. Use new bolts for re-installation.

4. Remove the bolts from the flange.

Important: Do not pound on the propeller shaft yoke ears. Never pry or place any tool between a yoke and a universal joint; you may damage the bearing seals. Tape the bearing cups onto the yoke and the universal joint in order to prevent the loss of bearing rollers.

5. Remove the propeller shaft from the vehicle.
^ Slide the propeller shaft forward.
^ Lower the rear of the propeller shaft.
^ Do not allow the propeller shaft to incline unsupported; the joint may fracture.
^ Slide the propeller shaft out of the transmission.

Installation Procedure

1. Lubricate the slip joint prior to installation.
2. Install the propeller shaft into the transmission.
3. Install the companion flange to the rear axle.
4. Align the reference marks on the pinion flange and the propeller shaft rear yoke.
5. Seat the rear yoke properly.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Important: Discard the bolts to the companion flange. Use new bolts for re-installation.

6. Install the new companion flange bolts.
^ Tighten the new companion flange bolts to 102 Nm (75 ft. lbs.).
7. Remove the safety stands.
8. Lower the vehicle.
