Idler Arm: Service and Repair
- Tools Required- J24319-B Universal Steering Linkage Puller
- J29193 Steering Linkage Installer (12 mm)
Removal Procedure
1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
2. Disconnect the idler arm assembly (2) from the frame (3) or support assembly.
Important: Do not free the ball stud by using a pickle fork or wedge-type tool. Damage to the seal or bushing may result.
3. Remove the nut from the idler arm ball stud.
4. Using the J24319-B, separate the idler arm from the relay rod.
5. Clean the threads of the ball stud and the ball stud nut.
6. Inspect the ball stud threads for damage.
7. Inspect the ball stud seal for cuts or other damage.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
1. Connect the idler arm assembly (2) or support assembly to the frame (3).
Tighten the bolts to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.), within 40 degrees in either direction.
2. Connect the relay rod to the idler arm ball stud.
Make sure the seal is on the stud.
Tighten the J29193 to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) in order to seat the tapers.
3. Remove the tool.
4. Install a new torque prevailing nut on the idler arm ball stud.
Tighten the nut to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
5. Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle.
