Camshaft Replacement

- J 23523-F Balancer Remover and Installer
Removal Procedure
1. Evacuate the air conditioning system, if equipped. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in Heating and Air Conditioning.
2. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure.
3. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
4. Remove the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement.
5. Remove the engine cooling fan and the fan shroud. Refer to Fan Clutch in Cooling System.
6. Remove the radiator grille. Refer to Grille Replacement.
7. Remove the hood latch bracket. Refer to Hood Latch Replacement.
8. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Cooling System.
9. Remove the A/C condenser, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
10. Remove the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Cooling System.
11. Remove the three crankshaft pulley bolts and the crankshaft pulley. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
12. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
13. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement
14. Lower the vehicle.
15. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement.
16. Remove the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring. Refer to Crankshaft Position (CKP) Reluctor Ring Replacement.
17. Rotate the number one piston to Top Dead Center (TDC).
18. Align the timing marks on the camshaft and the crankshaft sprockets.
19. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts.
20. Remove the camshaft sprocket and the camshaft timing chain. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprockets Replacement.
21. Remove the camshaft retainer plate and bolts using a T-30 TORX 69 socket.
22. Remove the camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Removal.
23. Clean all sealing surfaces.
24. Inspect all parts for wear. Refer to Camshaft Bearings Clean and Inspect.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Installation.
2. Install the components removed from the front of the engine. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprockets Replacement.
3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
4. Install the fasteners to the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement.
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Use the J 23523-F in order to install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
7. Install the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Cooling System.
8. Install the A/C condenser, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
9. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Cooling System
10. Install the hood latch bracket. Refer to Hood Latch Replacement.
11. Install the radiator grille. Refer to Grille Replacement.
12. Install the engine cooling fan and the upper fan shroud. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Cooling System.
13. Install the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
14. Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Upper Manifold) or Intake Manifold Replacement (Lower Manifold).
15. Install the valve rocker arms and push valve rods Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
16. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure.
17. Replace the engine oil filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
