Camshaft Replacement


Removal Procedure





1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure.
2. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement.
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement.
4. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Cooling System.
5. Remove the A/C condenser. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
6. Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Cooling System.
7. Remove the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement.
8. Remove the timing chain and the camshaft sprocket. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprockets Replacement.
9. Remove the balance shaft drive gear.
10. Remove the camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Removal.
11. Clean and inspect the camshaft and the bearings. Refer to Camshaft and Bearings Clean and Inspect.


Installation Procedure

Important: Whenever a new camshaft is installed, do the following procedures:
^ Change the engine oil.
^ Change the engine oil filter.
^ Add GM Engine Oil Supplement GM P/N 1052367 or the equivalent to the engine oil.

1. Install the camshaft into the engine block. Refer to Camshaft Installation.
2. Install the balance shaft drive gear. Refer to Balance Shaft Installation for alignment of the balance shaft drive gear and the driven gear.
3. Install the timing chain and camshaft sprocket. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprockets Replacement.
4. Install the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement
Install the A/C condenser. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
5. Install the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Cooling System.
7. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Cooling System.
8. Fill the engine cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
9. Recharge the air conditioning system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in Heating and Air Conditioning.
10. Install the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement.
11. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure.
