Muffler: Service and Repair
Removal Procedure
Important: On some models, the muffler services with an exhaust pipe, not separately but as a complete unit.
1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Loosen the exhaust pipe clamp that retains the exhaust pipe to the front of the muffler, if applicable. Remove the retaining nuts from the front muffler flange. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement.
3. Loosen the exhaust pipe clamp that retains the tail pipe to the rear of the muffler, if applicable.
4. Remove the hangers from the exhaust system, as required.
5. Remove the muffler from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the muffler to the vehicle.
2. Install the hangers to the exhaust system, as required.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
Important: Ensure proper alignment of newly installed exhaust components before tightening all clamps and bolts.

3. Tighten the exhaust pipe clamp that retains the exhaust pipe to the front of the muffler, if applicable. Install the new gasket and retaining nuts to the front muffler flange. Tighten the nuts. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement.
^ Tighten the exhaust pipe clamp that retains the exhaust pipe to the front of the muffler to 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.).
4. Tighten the exhaust pipe clamp that retains the tailpipe to the rear of the muffler, if applicable.
^ Tighten the exhaust pipe clamp that retains the tailpipe to the rear of the muffler to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
5. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
