Harmonic Balancer - Crankshaft Pulley: Service and Repair

- J 23523-F Crankshaft Balancer Remover and Installer

Removal Procedure





1. Remove the fan shroud from the radiator. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Cooling System.
2. Remove the drive belt from the pulleys. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
3. Remove the fan clutch from the water pump (if needed). Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Cooling System.
4. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
5. Remove the drive belt pulley from the crankshaft balancer.





6. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt and washer.
7. Using the J 23523-F and remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft.
8. Remove the crankshaft key from the crankshaft, if necessary.





9. Remove the tool from the crankshaft balancer.


Installation Procedure

Notice: The inertial weight section of the crankshaft balancer is assembled to the hub with a rubber type material. The correct installation procedures (with the proper tool) must be followed or movement of the inertial weight section of the hub will destroy the tuning of the crankshaft balancer.





1. Install the stud to the crankshaft and thread the stud fully into the tapered hole in the crankshaft.
2. Install the crankshaft balancer (external) over the end of the crankshaft.
3. Install the bearings, washer, and the nut to the crankshaft using the following procedures:
4. Turn the nut to pull the crankshaft balancer (external) into place.
5. Use the J 23523-F to install the crankshaft balancer on the crankshaft.





6. Remove the tool from the crankshaft balancer.





Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

7. Install the crankshaft balancer (external) bolt and washer.
^ Tighten the bolt to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.).





8. Install the drive belt pulley to the crankshaft balancer.
^ Tighten the bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
9. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
10. Install the fan clutch to the water pump (if needed). Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Replacement - Auxiliary in Cooling System.
11. Install the drive belt on the pulleys. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
12. Install the fan shroud to the radiator. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Cooling System.
