Removal Procedure

^ Tool(s) Required
- J 35271 Flywheel Holder
- J 36854 Heavy Duty Automotive Engine Stand

1. Relieve the fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Release Procedure in Powertrain Management.

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.

4. Remove the front skid plate from the vehicle (if equipped).
5. Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
6. Drain the engine oil.

7. Remove the automatic transmission fluid cooler lines (1) from the radiator on automatic transmission equipped vehicles. Cap the open lines to prevent leakage.
8. Remove the flywheel cover.

9. Remove the torque converter bolts on automatic transmission equipped vehicles. Use the J 35271 in order to lock the flywheel (1).

10. Support the transmission. Remove the 4 bolts and the right side engine-to-transmission support bracket (3).

11. Remove the 2 bolts and separate the front pipe assembly from the exhaust manifold on vehicles not equipped with the PUP catalytic converter.
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. Remove the hood from the vehicle.

Important: The vehicle should be supported on a hoist prior to removing the strut tower brace. This will facilitate removal and installation of the brace.

14. Remove the 6 bolts and the strut tower brace. Refer to Front Suspension Support Brace Replacement in Steering and Suspension.

15. Remove the 3 nuts and separate the front pipe assembly from the exhaust manifold on vehicles equipped with the PUP catalytic converter.
16. Remove the engine block-to-catalytic converter support bracket.

Important: Do not discharge the A/C system nor remove the refrigerant lines from the compressor.

17. Remove the 3 bolts (1) and the A/C compressor, if equipped, from its bracket and position aside. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.

18. Remove the upper radiator hose (2) from the vehicle.

19. Remove the lower radiator hose (1) from the vehicle.
20. Remove the radiator overflow hose from the radiator.
21. Remove the 4 radiator shroud clips.
22. Remove 1 bolt from each side of the radiator upper support.

23. Lean the fan shroud toward the engine and lift the radiator up and out of the vehicle.

24. Remove the four fan mounting nuts. Use a second wrench to hold the fan shaft.

25. Remove the fan and the fan shroud.

26. Loosen the adjusting bolt (1) and the pivot bolt (3).
27. Remove the tension on the fan belt by rotating the tension bolt (2) counterclockwise.
28. Remove the fan belt.
29. Remove the 2 tensioner mounting bolts (1, 3) and the tensioner.

30. Rotate the belt tensioner clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt.

31. Remove the bolt and the throttle cable bracket (2) from the intake manifold.
32. Remove the cables from the throttle body bellcrank and position aside.
33. Remove the power steering pressure and return lines from the power steering pump and position aside. Cap the open lines to prevent leakage.
34. Disconnect the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor connector.
35. Disconnect the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor connector.
36. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.

37. Remove the heater hoses (1) from the heater core. Mark the location of the inlet and outlet hoses for correct installation.

38. Disconnect the fuel feed and return hoses (9). Label the feed and return hoses for correct installation.
39. Disconnect the following electrical connectors:
^ The 4 ignition coils
^ The fuel injector wiring harness (3)
^ The Throttle Position (TP) sensor (8)
^ The Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor (11)
^ The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve (6)
^ The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve (1)
^ The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor (2)
^ The EVAP canister purge valve (7)
^ The Heated Oxygen Sensor 1 (HO2S1)
^ The Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor
^ The Power Steering Pressure (PSP) switch wire
^ The generator wires
^ The oil pressure switch wire
40. Remove the bolt and the ground wires from the intake manifold (10).
41. Remove the EVAP canister purge hose from the intake manifold.
42. Remove the wiring harness from the retaining clamps.
43. Remove the brake booster vacuum line from the intake manifold.
44. Disconnect the starter solenoid electrical connector.

45. Remove the nut and the battery positive cable (3) from the starter solenoid.
46. Remove the 2 bolts (1) and the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
47. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor (2) connector.

48. Remove the cylinder block-to-transmission bolt and nuts.

49. Remove the 2 nuts from the top side of the engine mounts.
50. Install an engine hoist to the engine.

Important: Before lifting the engine, ensure that all of the hoses, pipes, electrical wires, and cables are disconnected from the engine and positioned aside.

51. Remove the engine assembly from the vehicle by sliding the assembly toward the front side of the engine compartment. Carefully lift the engine assembly from the vehicle verifying clearance on all sides.
