Condition
Some customers may comment on a frayed serpentine belt and/or a belt squeal.
Cause
The cause of this condition may be that some power steering pump brackets are not properly positioning the power steering pump pulley. A misalignment occurs between the power steering pump pulley and the generator pulley.
Correction
Adjust the position of the power steering pump bracket and replace the serpentine belt using the procedure and part number listed below.
1. Remove the serpentine belt.
1.1. Use a wrench and rotate the belt tensioner clockwise.
1.2. With pressure applied to the wrench and tension relieved from the belt, remove the belt.
2. Remove the 3 bolts and the power steering pump from the power steering pump bracket. Move the power steering pump away from the power steering pump bracket.
3. Remove the bolt and the generator from the power steering pump bracket. Move the generator away from the power steering pump bracket.
4. Loosen the 3 bolts attaching the power steering pump bracket to the engine block so they are only finger tight. This will hold the bracket in position.
5. Push the power steering pump bracket towards the back of the engine.
6. Tighten bolt "3" snug while holding the power steering pump bracket to the rear of the engine.
Important:
Bolts "1" and "2" control the plane of the power steering pump bracket.
7. Tighten bolt "1" snug.
8. Tighten bolt "2" snug.
9. Tighten the 3 bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 25 N.m (18.5 lb ft)
10. Install the generator and the bolt to the power steering pump bracket.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 23 N.m (17 lb ft).
11. Install the power steering pump and the 3 bolts to the power steering pump bracket.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 25 N.m (18.5 lb ft).
12. Install the serpentine belt.
12.1. Properly route and install the belt onto the drive pulleys.
12.2. Use a wrench and rotate the belt tensioner clockwise.
12.3. With pressure applied to the wrench, install the belt.
12.4. With the belt installed properly, release the belt tensioner.
12.5. Inspect that the belt is properly installed on all pulleys. When a new belt is correctly installed, the hash mark will be within the indicated range on the tensioner.
