Front Steering Knuckle: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

- Tools Required
- J 24319-B Tie Rod End Fuller





1. Remove the hub and bearing assembly. Refer to Wheel Hub, Bearing, and Seal Replacement (4WD Pickup and Utilities).
2. Remove the cotter pin from the outer tie rod ball stud nut.
3. Remove the outer tie rod ball stud nut.
4. Remove the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle using J24319-B.
5. Remove the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle. Refer to Upper Ball Joint Replacement (RWD).
6. Remove the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Ball Joint Replacement (4WD).





7. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE





1. Install the steering knuckle to the upper and lower ball joints ball studs.
2. Install the lower ball joint to the steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Ball Joint Replacement (4WD).
3. Install the upper ball joint to the steering knuckle. Refer to Upper Ball Joint Replacement (RWD).





4. Install the tie rod end ball stud to the steering knuckle.

NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

5. Install the outer tie rod ball stud nut.
- Tighten the outer tie rod ball stud nut to 53 Nm (39 ft. lbs.).
6. Install a new cotter pin to the outer tie rod stud nut. Bend the pin ends against the nut flats.
7. Remove the hub and bearing assembly. Refer to Wheel Hub, Bearing, and Seal Replacement (4WD Pickup and Utilities).
