Cylinder Head Replacement - Left
Removal Procedure1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Starting and Charging.
2. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
3. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct from the throttle body. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement in Powertrain Management.
4. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.
5. Remove the engine cooling fan assembly. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Cooling System.
Important: Do not evacuate the A/C system. The A/C pipes can remain on the compressor.
6. Remove the air conditioning compressor, if equipped, and move aside. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
7. Remove the AIR pipe bracket and nut, if equipped from the power steering pump rear bracket stud.
8. Remove the nuts holding the power steering pump rear bracket to the engine.
Important: The power steering pump can remain on the power steering pump mounting bracket. The power steering pump hoses can remain attached to the power steering pump.
9. Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket and secure out of the way. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (PS Pump Mounting Bracket).
10. Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket stud from the cylinder head.
11. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Lower).
12. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Left 4.3L).
13. Remove the spark plug wire harness and the support.
14. Remove the ground wires at the rear of the cylinder head.
15. Remove the fuel line bracket bolt at the rear of the cylinder head.
16. Remove the valve pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
17. Remove the cylinder head bolts.
18. Remove the cylinder head.
19. Clean all surfaces. Refer to Cylinder Head Clean and Inspect.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Installation (Left).
2. Install the valve pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
3. Install the spark plug wire harness and the support.
^ Tighten the support bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
4. Install the ground wires at the rear of the cylinder head.
^ Tighten the ground wire bolt to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the fuel pipe bracket bolt at the rear of the cylinder head.
^ Tighten the fuel pipe bracket bolt to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
6. Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Left 4.3L).
7. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Lower).
8. Install the power steering pump mounting bracket stud in the cylinder head.
^ Tighten the power steering pump mounting bracket stud to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
9. Install the power steering pump mounting bracket. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (PS Pump Mounting Bracket).
10. Install the nuts holding the power steering pump rear bracket to the engine.
^ Tighten the power steering pump rear bracket nuts to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
11. Install the AIR bracket and nut, if equipped.
^ Tighten the nut to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
12. Install the air conditioning compressor, if equipped. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
13. Install the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Cooling System.
14. Fill the engine coolant system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
15. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Starting and Charging.
16. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.
17. Install the air cleaner outlet duct onto the throttle body. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement in Powertrain Management.
