Camshaft: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.





2. Remove the engine cover.
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly and the air inlet duct to the throttle body assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.
4. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Cooling System.
5. Remove the A/C condenser, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
6. Remove the engine cooling fan assembly.
7. Remove the valve rocker arm covers.
8. Remove the intake manifold.
9. Remove the valve lifters and the push rods.
10. Remove the engine front cover.





11. Remove the crankshaft position reluctor ring.
12. Remove the camshaft timing chain and the camshaft sprocket.





13. Remove the balance shaft drive gear.





14. Remove the camshaft.

Installation Procedure

Important: Whenever a new camshaft is installed, do the following procedures:
^ Change the engine oil.
^ Change the engine oil filter.
^ Add GM Engine Oil Supplement GM P/N 1052367 or equivalent to the engine oil.





Install the camshaft into the engine block.





1. Install the balance shaft drive gear.





2. Line up the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket dot to dot. When these dots are lined up dot to dot, the number four cylinder is at the top dead center of its compression stroke.
3. Install the camshaft timing chain and sprockets.

Notice: Failure to properly align the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring may result in component damage and effect OBD II system performance.

4. Install the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring.
5. Install the valve lifters and the valve pushrods.





6. Install the engine front cover.
7. Install the intake manifold.

Important: When the alignments marks on the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket are aligned, the engine is at cylinder number four top dead center.





8. Rotate the engine to align the crankshaft balancer marks (1) and (4) with the front cover marks (2) and (3) for cylinder number one top dead center.
9. Install the distributor.
10. Install the valve rocker arm covers.
11. Install the fan assembly.
12. Install the A/C condenser, if equipped.
13. Install the radiator.
14. Install the engine cover.
15. Connect the battery negative cable.
