Camshaft: Service and Repair

Remove Procedure

Notice: Perform TDC Offset Recovery procedure if the timing chain, timing gears, engine front cover, crankshaft position sensor, crankshaft or other components affecting the timing are replaced.

1. Disconnect the battery negative cables from the battery.
^ For the front battery, refer to Battery Cable Replacement (Battery Cable Negative) in Starting and Charging.
^ For the auxiliary battery, refer to Battery Cable Replacement (Battery Cable Aux. Negative) in Starting and Charging.
2. Remove the engine cover from the vehicle.
3. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
4. Evacuate the air conditioning system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in Heating and Air Conditioning.
5. Remove the air cleaner assembly from the vehicle.
6. Remove the surge tank from then vehicle. Refer to Surge Tank Replacement in Cooling System.
7. Remove the air intake duct from the turbocharger.





8. Remove the transmission oil level indicator and tube from the upper intake manifold.
9. Remove the grille from the vehicle.
10. Remove the radiator support from the vehicle.
11. Remove the air conditioning condenser from the vehicle. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
12. Remove the radiator from the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Cooling System.
13. Remove the drive belts from the pulleys.
14. Remove the engine cooling fan from the water pump.
15. Remove the engine front cover from the engine block.
16. Remove the timing chain from the camshaft and crankshaft.
17. Remove the upper intake manifold from the turbocharger.
18. Remove the lower intake manifold from the cylinder head.
19. Remove the valve rocker arm covers from the cylinder heads.
20. Remove the turbocharger from the engine block.
21. Remove the oil pump drive from the engine block.
22. Remove the cylinder heads from the engine block.
23. Remove the valve lifters from the engine block.





24. Remove the thrust bearing and retainer from the engine block.
25. Remove the camshaft spacer from the engine block.





26. Remove the camshaft from the engine block, use care as not to damage the camshaft bearing.
27. Replace the wood drift if the key is damaged or has signs of excessive wear.

Installation Procedure

Important: Whenever a new camshaft is installed, replace all valve lifters, wood drift key, engine oil, and oil filter.

Notice: Perform TDC Offset Recovery procedure if the timing chain, timing gears, engine front cover, crankshaft position sensor, crankshaft or other components affecting the timing are replaced.





1. Install the camshaft into the engine block.
^ Coat the camshaft lobes with camshaft and valve lifter Pre-Lube GM P/N 1052365 or equivalent.
^ Lubricate the camshaft bearing journals with clean engine oil.





2. Install the spacer with the chamfer towards the camshaft.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Install the thrust plate and bearing.
^ Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the timing chain and sprocket to the camshaft.
5. Install the valve lifters in the engine block.
6. Install the engine front cover on the engine block.
7. Install the oil pump drive in the engine block.
8. Install the cylinder heads on the engine block.
9. Install the valve rocker arm cover to the cylinder heads.
10. Install the lower intake manifold to the cylinder heads.
11. Install the turbocharger to the engine block.
12. Install the upper intake manifold to the turbocharger.
13. Install the engine cooling fan to the water pump.
14. Install the drive belt ion the pulleys.
15. Install the radiator to the vehicle.
16. Install the radiator support to the vehicle.
17. Install the air conditioning condenser to the vehicle.
18. Install the grille to the vehicle.
19. Install the air intake duct to the turbocharger.





20. install the transmission oil level indicator and tube to the upper intake manifold.
21. Install the air cleaner assembly to the vehicle.
22. Install the surge tank to the vehicle.
23. Connect the battery negative cables to the batteries.
24. Refill the cooling system.
25. Recharge the A/C system.
26. Inspect fuel injection pump timing.
27. Perform TDC offset timing adjustment.
28. Install the engine cover in the vehicle.
