Water Pump: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.





1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery terminal.
2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
3. Drain the engine cooling system.





4. Remove the air intake duct from the throttle body.





5. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir.





6. Remove the upper fan shroud.





7. Remove the fan clutch assembly from the vehicle.





8. Remove the drive belt from the vehicle (A/C shown).





9. Remove the water pump pulley mounting bolts.
10. Remove the water pump pulley from the water pump.





11. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water pump.





12. Disconnect the by-pass hose from the water pump.





13. Remove the heater outlet hose from the water pump.
14. Remove the water pump mounting bolts.





15. Remove the water pump and the gasket.
16. Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces of the engine block.
17. Clean the water pump mounting bolts, and check the threads for damage.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the gaskets and the water pump.
2. Apply GM P/N 12346004 or equivalent thread sealant on the water pump mounting bolts.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





3. Install the water pump mounting bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 42 Nm (31 ft. lbs.).





4. Connect the heater outlet hose to the water pump.





5. Connect the by-pass hose to the water pump.





6. Connect the lower radiator hose to the coolant pump.





7. Install the water pump pulley to the water pump.
8. Install the water pump pulley mounting bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).





9. Install the drive belt in the vehicle.





10. Install the fan clutch in the vehicle.





11. Install the upper fan shroud.





12. Install the coolant recovery reservoir.





13. Install the air duct to the throttle body.
14. Install the air cleaner assembly in the vehicle.
15. Connect the battery negative cable.
16. Refill the engine coolant system.
17. Bleed the air from the cooling system.
18. Inspect the system for coolant leaks.
