Camshaft: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure
1. Evacuate the air conditioning system, if equipped. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in Heating and Air Conditioning.
2. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement (Battery Disconnect/Connect) in Starting and Charging.
3. Drain the engine oil.





4. Remove the valve rocker arms and push rods.
5. Remove the lower intake manifold.
6. Remove the valve lifters.
7. Remove the engine cooling fan and the fan shroud.
8. Remove the radiator grille.
9. Remove the hood latch bracket.
10. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Cooling System.
11. Remove the A/C condenser, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
12. Remove the water pump.
13. Remove the three crankshaft pulley bolts and the crankshaft pulley.
14. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lift Points.
15. Remove the oil pan.
16. Lower the vehicle.
17. Remove the engine front cover.
18. Remove the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring.
19. Rotate the number one piston to Top Dead Center (TDC).





20. Align the timing marks on the camshaft and the crankshaft sprockets.





21. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts.
22. Remove the camshaft sprocket and the timing chain.
23. Remove the camshaft retainer plate and bolts using a T-30 TORX (R) socket.

Important: All camshaft journals are the same diameter, so care must be used in removing the camshaft to avoid damage to the bearings.





24. Remove the camshaft.
25. Clean all sealing surfaces.
26. Inspect all parts for wear.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the camshaft.
2. Install the components removed from the front of the engine.
3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lift Points.
4. Install the fasteners to the oil pan.
5. Lower the vehicle.





6. Use the J 23523-F in order to install the crankshaft balancer.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Install the crankshaft pulley in the following manner:
7. Install the pulley and the three bolts.
8. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt.
9. Tighten
- Tighten the pulley bolts to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.).
- Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.).
10. Install the water pump.
11. Install the A/C condenser, if equipped.
12. Install the radiator.
13. Install the hood latch bracket.
14. Install the radiator grille.
15. Install the engine cooling fan and the upper fan shroud.
16. Install the valve lifters.
17. Install the lower intake manifold.
18. Install the valve rocker arms and push rods.
19. Connect the battery negative cable.
20. Replace the engine oil filter.
