Rocker arm studs that have damaged threads may be replaced with standard studs. Loose studs should be replaced with .003 inch or .013 inch oversize studs which are available for replacement.
Remove the old stud by placing a suitable spacer over the stud, Fig. 19. Install a nut and flat washer on the stud and pull out the stud by turning the nut. After reaming the hole for an oversize stud, coat the press-fit area of the new stud with rear axle lubricant. Install the stud using stud driver tool J6880 or equivalent, by driving it in until tool bottoms on the head, Fig. 20. On 7.4L/V8-454, the rocker arm studs are threaded into the cylinder head. Coat threads on cylinder head end of stud with sealer before assembling to head.
