Circuit/System Description
The hybrid/EV battery energy control module will diagnose its own systems and determine when a fault condition is present. Diagnostics and system status is communicated from the hybrid/EV battery energy control module to the hybrid powertrain control module 2 through serial data. The hybrid powertrain control module 2 is the host controller for diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information. The hybrid/EV battery energy control module monitors the hybrid/EV battery voltage at the battery side of the high voltage main contactors.
Conditions for Running the DTC
* The hybrid/EV battery energy control module is awake and communicating.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
P0AFA
The Hybrid Battery Pack Voltage is less than 205 V.
OR
The Minimum Hybrid Battery Cell Group Voltage in the hybrid battery is less than 2.05 V.
P0AFB
The Hybrid Battery Pack Voltage is greater than 419 V.
OR
The Maximum Hybrid Battery Cell Group Voltage in the hybrid battery is greater than 4.4 V.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
* DTCs P0AFA and P0AFB are type A DTCs.
* If any of these DTCs are set, the vehicle will operate in a reduced power mode and charge sustaining mode.
* Once the vehicle has been turned OFF the contactors will be prevented from closing.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
P0AFA and P0AFB
* DTCs P0AFA and P0AFB are type A DTCs.
* The Clear Secured High Voltage DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes reset function must be performed with a scan tool before clear codes.
Diagnostic Aids
The hybrid/EV battery pack high voltage manual service disconnect is not installed correctly, or a blown manual service disconnect fuse will cause P0AFA to set.

• If any of the DTCs are set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle.
2. Vehicle in Service Mode, engine OFF, verify the scan tool Hybrid Battery Pack Terminal 1 Voltage parameter is between 205-419 V.
• If the Hybrid Battery Pack Terminal 1 Voltage parameter is not within the specified range, refer to Hybrid Battery Pack Voltage Diagnosis.
3. Observe the scan tool Hybrid Battery 1-96 voltage parameters. Each reading should be between 3.0-4.1 V and all readings should be within 0.1 V of each other.
• If the Hybrid Battery 1-96 cell group voltages are not within the specified range, refer to Hybrid Battery 1-96 Cell Group Diagnosis.
Circuit/System Testing
Danger: Always perform the High Voltage Disabling procedure prior to servicing any High Voltage component or connection. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and proper procedures must be followed.
The High Voltage Disabling procedure includes the following steps:
* Identify how to disable high voltage.
* Identify how to test for the presence of high voltage.
* Identify condition under which high voltage is always present and personal protection equipment (PPE) and proper procedures must be followed.
Before working on any high voltage system, be sure to wear the following Personal Protection Equipment:
* Safety glasses with appropriate side shields when within 15 meters (50 feet) of the vehicle, either indoors or outdoors.
* Certified and up-to-date Class "0" Insulation gloves rated at 1000V with leather protectors.
- Visually and functionally inspect the gloves before use.
- Wear the Insulation gloves with leather protectors at all times when working with the high voltage battery assembly, whether the system is energized or not.
Failure to follow the procedures may result in serious injury or death.
Danger: The Volt Battery Pack will utilize an exchange program. Please consult the most recent revision of bulletin/PI #PIP4841, available in Service Information (SI), for a list of approved Volt Battery Pack service procedures. Components that may be removed and serviced without exchanging the complete battery pack are identified in the bulletin/PI. Please contact the GM Technical Assistance Center if you have any questions.
Hybrid Battery Pack Voltage Diagnosis
1. Vehicle OFF, disable the high voltage at the A4 hybrid/EV battery pack. Refer to High Voltage Disabling High Voltage Disabling.
2. Remove the A4 hybrid/EV battery pack from the vehicle. Refer to Drive Motor Battery Replacement and Shipping Preparation (Volt) Procedures
3. Remove the A4 hybrid/EV battery pack cover. Refer to Drive Motor Battery Cover Replacement Drive Motor Battery Cover Replacement
4. Connect the battery tray ground straps with a jumper to chassis ground.
5. Install a known good S15 manual service disconnect.
Note: Wear your High Voltage Insulation gloves until you have determined that a high voltage exposure risk is no longer present.
7. Test for 205-419 V between the Ground (300 V) C5A and B+ (300 V) C5J at the A28 hybrid battery contactor assembly.
• If not within the specified range, replace the A4 hybrid/EV battery pack.
8. Disconnect X3 harness connector at the K16 hybrid/EV battery energy control module.
9. Test for less than 10 ohms between the terminals listed below of the A28 hybrid battery contactor assembly.
* Ground (300 V) C5A and the K16 hybrid/EV battery energy control module terminal 4 X3
* B+ (300 V) C5J and the K16 hybrid/EV battery energy control module terminal 1 X3
• If greater than the specified value, replace the A28 hybrid battery contactor assembly. After the repair is complete with a scan tool, the Clear Secured High Voltage DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes reset function must be performed.
10. If all circuits test normal, replace the K16 hybrid/EV battery energy control module.
Hybrid Battery 1-96 Cell Group Diagnosis
1. Vehicle OFF, disable the high voltage at the A4 hybrid/EV battery pack. Refer to High Voltage Disabling High Voltage Disabling.
2. Remove the A4 hybrid/EV battery pack from the vehicle. Refer to Drive Motor Battery Replacement and Shipping Preparation (Volt) Procedures
3. Remove the A4 hybrid/EV battery pack cover. Refer to Drive Motor Battery Cover Replacement Drive Motor Battery Cover Replacement
4. Connect the battery tray ground straps with a jumper to chassis ground.
Note: Do not leave the EL-48571-25 connected to the orange hybrid/EV battery interface control module harness or leave the orange hybrid/EV battery interface control module harness disconnected for more than one hour.
Leaving the EL-48571-25 connected to the orange hybrid/EV battery interface control module harness or leaving the orange hybrid/EV battery interface control module harness disconnected for
more than one hour will result in a unrecoverable unbalanced hybrid/EV battery section.
Note: Use the schematics to identify the correct hybrid/EV battery interface control module and battery section.
5. Disconnect the appropriate hybrid/EV battery interface control module harness connector.
6. Connect the EL-48571-25 - high voltage battery pin out box.
7. Insert the DMM probes into the EL-48571-25 test cavities.
8. Measure and record the voltage of each of the cell groups by cycling the EL-48571-25 through each of the switch positions. Refer to EL-48571 High Voltage Battery Pin Out Box Reference Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview.
9. Each cell group voltage reading should be between 3.0-4.1 V.
• If not within the specified range, test the circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the appropriate C4 hybrid/EV battery section. After the repair is complete with a scan tool, the Clear Secured High Voltage DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes reset function must be performed.
10. Each cell group voltage reading should be within 0.1 V of each other.
• If not within the specified range, test the circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the appropriate C4 hybrid/EV battery section. After the repair is complete with a scan tool, the Clear Secured High Voltage DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes reset function must be performed.
11. If all circuits test normal, replace the appropriate K112 hybrid/EV battery interface control module. After the repair is complete with a scan tool, the Clear Secured High Voltage DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes reset function must be performed.
Repair Instructions
