Windshield Wiper Washer System Malfunction

Windshield Wiper Washer System Malfunction

Diagnostic Instructions

* Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle (Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle) prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
* Review Strategy Based Diagnosis (Strategy Based Diagnosis) for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
* Diagnostic Procedure Instructions (Diagnostic Procedure Instructions)provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

Diagnostic Fault Information

Circuit/System Description

The body control module (BCM) controls the washer motor based on an input from the windshield washer switch, a part of the multifunction switch. The BCM monitors the washer switch through the windshield washer pump control circuit. When the WASH switch is closed, voltage is supplied to the BCM which will command the windshield washer fluid pump and the low speed wipers On.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON, turn the wipers on low speed; the wipers should activate. If the wipers do not activate, refer to Windshield Wiper System Malfunction (Windshield Wiper System Malfunction).
2. Turn wipers to the OFF position. Operate the windshield washer using the WASH switch. Verify the washer pump activates.

If the washer pump does not activate, refer to Circuit/System Testing.

3. Observe the scan tool Windshield Washer Switch parameter while cycling the WASH switch ON and OFF. The parameter should cycle between Active and Inactive.

If the parameter does not cycle between the specified values, replace the BCM.

Circuit/System Testing

Note: The control circuit is a pass through in the BCM and the fuse block. The BCM does not control the washer pump.

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the windshield washer fluid pump.
2. Test for less than 20 ohm between the ground circuit terminal B and ground.

If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

3. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal A and the ground circuit terminal B.
4. Turn the windshield washer switch ON and OFF. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the selected states.

If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the windshield wiper/washer switch.
If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the windshield wiper/washer switch.

5. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the windshield washer fluid pump.

Component Testing

Windshield Wiper/Washer Switch
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the Windshield Wiper/Washer Switch.
2. Test for infinite resistance between the signal terminal B and the ignition circuit terminal D with the switch in the open position.

If not the specified value, replace the Windshield Wiper/Washer Switch.

3. Test for less than 5 ohm between the signal terminal B and the ignition terminal D with the switch in the closed position.

If greater than the specified range, replace the windshield wiper/washer switch.

Windshield Washer Fluid Pump
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the windshield washer fluid pump.
2. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the control terminal A and 12 V. Install a jumper wire between the ground terminal B and ground.
3. Verify the washer function is activated.

If the washer function does not activate, replace the windshield washer fluid pump.
