55. Lower Crankcase Installation




Lower Crankcase Installation

Special Tools

J 45059 - Angle Meter

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools (Special Tools)




1. Install the upper crankshaft bearings and lubricate bearing surfaces with engine oil.




2. Install the crankshaft on the journals.




3. Install the lower bearing halves, without grooves, into the lower crankcase. Apply oil to bearing surfaces.




4. Apply sealer to the surfaces of the engine block to bedplate mating surfaces. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers (Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers).




5. Install the lower crankcase. Tap gently into place with a suitable tool, if necessary. Ensure the lower crankcase is aligned properly on the dowels.





Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

6. Install the NEW crankshaft bearing bolts in sequence finger tight.

1. Tighten the crankshaft bearing bolts in sequence to 20 Nm (15 lb ft).
2. Using the J 45059 - meter , tighten the crankshaft bearing bolts in sequence to 77 degrees.





Note: Do not forget the 2 rear outer bolts.

7. Install the lower crankcase perimeter bolts. Tighten the lower crankcase perimeter bolts in sequence to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).
