Engine Controls - MIL ON/DTC's P0441/P0496 Set

# 06-06-04-040: Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)/Check Engine Lamp On with DTC P0441 or P0496 Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) System Continuous Purge Flow Set (Reprogram ECM) - (Jul 1, 2011)

Subject: Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)/Check Engine Lamp On with DTC P0441 or P0496 "Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) System Continuous Purge Flow" Set (Reprogram ECM)

Models:
2004-2006 Chevrolet Optra
with 2.0L 4-Cylinder Engine (VIN Z - RPO L34)

Condition
Some customers may comment that a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) or Check Engine lamp is on. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0441 (2004 vehicles) or P0496 (2005-2006 vehicles) "Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) System Continuous Purge Flow" may be set. This condition may be more likely to occur if the vehicle is parked and allowed to hot soak for several hours.

Cause
This condition may be a false MIL caused by fuel tank vacuum condensation that occurs due to characteristics of the curved fuel tank.

In most cases, there is no actual leakage from the EVAP emission system. In rare cases, DTC P0441 or P0496 will be set with actual leakage due to purge valve hardware issues.

Correction
Reprogram the engine control module (ECM) with the appropriate calibration following the procedure below.

If the DTC sets after reprogramming, follow the diagnostics for P0441 or P0496 in SI.

Important:
Prior to reprogramming, check the battery voltage state. If the battery is not fully charged, charge the battery.

Important:
Prior to reprogramming, make sure the Tech 2(R) is updated with the latest software.

Important:
Prior to reprogramming, make sure Service Programming System has TIS 6.5 2006 (or later) software loaded.

1. Reprogram the ECM with the appropriate calibration. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) in SI. For the appropriate calibration, refer to Calibration Information below.

2. Check for any DTCs in the ECM/TCM. Clear any DTCs that are stored.

3. Perform the following idle learn procedure for idle RPM stability before starting the engine.

3.1 Turn the key OFF for 10 seconds.

3.2 Turn the key ON (with the engine off) for 10 seconds.

3.3 Turn the key OFF for 10 seconds.

If the MIL illuminates and DTC P0441 or P0496 resets after performing this service procedure, please follow the diagnostics for P0441 or P0496 in SI.

Calibration Information
The reprogramming files are available in TIS2Web (TIS data 7.5/2006 or later).
