Ignition Coil: Testing and Inspection

Fig. 3 Ignition coil terminal identification. 1986 - 88:

1986 - 88

1. Check input voltage as follows:
a. Turn ignition switch to ON position.
b. Using a suitable volt-ohmmeter, measure voltage between (+) terminal of coil and body, Fig. 3.
c. Voltage reading should be approximately 12 volts.
2. Check primary coil resistance as follows:
a. With ignition switch in OFF position, disconnect wire terminals from coil.
b. Check resistance between (+) and ( - ) terminals of coil using suitable volt/ohmmeter.
c. Resistance should be 1.2 - 1.5 ohms.
3. Check secondary coil resistance as follows:
a. With ignition switch in OFF position, disconnect wire terminal from coil.
b. Check resistance between (+) and high voltage terminals of coil, Fig. 3.
c. Resistance should be 10.2 - 13.8 ohms.
4. Check insulation resistance:
a. With ignition switch in OFF position, disconnect wire terminal from coil and measure resistance between (+) terminal and body.
b. Resistance should be greater than 10 ohms.
