Differential

DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove side bearings from differential case using suitable puller, then install bearings using a suitable press.

2. Loosen staked part of the lockplate, then place alignment marks on ring gear and case.

3. Remove eight attaching bolts and locking plates, then the ring gear from case. Align marks on ring gear and differential case, then install new locking plate and attaching bolts. Torque attaching bolts to 71 ft lbs. Stake attaching bolts using a suitable punch and hammer.

4. Measure backlash of one side gear while holding one pinion and the other side gear toward the case. If backlash is not between 0.0020-0.0079 inch, install correct thrust washer to the side gear.

5. Remove pinion shaft lock pin from ring gear side using a suitable punch.

6. Remove pinion shaft from case, then the two pinions and two side gears with four thrust washers from each.

ASSEMBLY
1. Install thrust washers, side gears and pinion gears in differential case.

2. Install pinion shaft.

3. Check side gear backlash as shown in above image. Backlash should be between 0.0020-0.0079 inch. If backlash is not as specified, select thrust washers which will ensure backlash is within specifications, see above image. Try to select washers of the same size on both sides.

4. Drive lock pin through case and hole in pinion shaft using a suitable punch, then stake differential case.
