Removal and Replacement

TRANSAXLE REPLACE
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove air cleaner assembly.
3. Disconnect neutral start switch electrical connector.
4. Disconnect solenoid valve electrical connector.
5. Disconnect speed sensor electrical connector, if equipped.
6. Disconnect speedometer cable.
7. Disconnect throttle cable from linkage.
8. Disconnect control cable.
9. Disconnect and cap oil cooler lines.
10. Disconnect water inlet hose.
11. Raise and support vehicle, then drain fluid from transaxle.
12. Remove engine under cover attaching bolts, then the under cover.
13. Remove dust covers from crossmember, then the front and rear mount bolts.
14. Support transaxle assembly using a suitable jack, then remove engine center crossmember attaching bolts and crossmember.
15. Disconnect front exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
16. Carefully disconnect lefthand drive shaft.
17. Remove starter motor attaching bolts, then the starter.
18. Remove stiffener plate and engine rear end plate.
19. Hold crankshaft pulley with a suitable wrench, then remove torque converter attaching bolts.
20. With transaxle assembly properly supported, remove engine rear attaching bolts.
21. Remove transaxle from vehicle.
22. Reverse procedure to install. Note the following:

a. Using suitable calipers and a straightedge, measure installed surface to transaxle housing surface.
b. Distance measurement obtained should be 0.079 inch or more.
c. Torque 12 mm transaxle to engine block attaching bolts to 47 ft lbs and 10 mm attaching bolts to 34 ft lbs.
d. Torque engine rear mount attaching bolts to 38 ft. lbs.
e. Torque transaxle converter attaching bolts to 20 ft lbs.
f. Torque center engine crossmember attaching bolts to 29 ft lbs.
g. Torque front and rear mount attaching bolts to 29 ft lbs.
