1. Using a suitable feeler gauge, measure clearance between snap ring and flange, Fig. 10. If clearance exceeds .0350-.575, replace discs or flange.
2. Remove snap ring from clutch drum, Fig. 11, then the flange, discs and plates.
3. Using tool No. J-23327 or equivalent, compress piston return springs, then remove snap ring using a suitable screwdriver.
4. Remove spring retainer, then the 18 return springs.
5. Assemble direct clutch onto oil pump, then remove piston using compressed air and, if necessary, a suitable pair of pliers. Remove direct clutch from oil pump.
6. Remove clutch piston O-ring.
