EXC. 16 VALVE ENGINE
1. Remove Nos. 1, 2 and 3 timing belt covers as described previously.
2. Remove oil pan attaching bolts, then the oil pan.
3. Remove righthand under cover.
4. Remove flywheel cover and crankshaft pulley.
5. Mark position of camshaft and crankshaft timing pulleys and timing belt rotational direction.
6. Loosen idler pulley bolt, move pulley over to relieve belt tension and tighten bolt.
7. Pull timing belt off of crankshaft timing pulley.
8. Remove dipstick tube.
9. Remove timing belt idler pulley.
10. Remove oil pump bolts and oil pump.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Using a feeler gauge, measure clearance between the driven gear and body, Fig. 23.
b. If clearance is greater than .008 inch, replace gear and/or body.
c. Using a feeler gauge, measure clearance between both gear tips and crescent as shown in Fig. 24.
d. If clearance is greater than .0138 inch, replace gear and/or body.
e. Using a feeler gauge and flat block, measure side clearance as shown in Fig. 25.
f. If clearance is greater than .004 inch, replace gear and/or body.
