Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

EXC. 16 VALVE ENGINE
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Remove air cleaner assembly.
4. Raise and support vehicle.
5. Drain engine oil.
6. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold and exhaust bracket from engine.
7. Disconnect air hose from converter pipe.
8. Loosen power steering pivot bolt, if equipped.
9. Lower vehicle.
10. Disconnect accelerator and throttle cable from carburetor and bracket.
11. Mark, then disconnect all vacuum lines and electrical connectors from cylinder head assembly.
12. Disconnect fuel lines from fuel pump.
13. Disconnect upper radiator hose, water outlet and heater hose.
14. Remove power steering bracket, if equipped.
15. Place No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke, then disconnect spark plug wires and remove distributor assembly.
16. Remove PCV valve and wiring harness.
17. Remove No. 1 (upper) timing belt cover bolts.
18. Remove cylinder head cover and gasket.
19. Remove alternator drive belt and water pump pulley bolts.
20. Remove No. 1 (upper) timing cover and gasket.
21. Mark camshaft timing pulley position and timing belt rotational direction.
22. Loosen idler pulley and move aside slightly to release timing belt tension, then snug down pulley bolt.
23. Pull timing belt away from camshaft timing pulley.

24. Loosen and remove cylinder head bolts gradually in three steps and in sequence shown in Fig. 1.
25. Remove cylinder head with intake and exhaust manifolds attached.
26. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install cylinder head, then gradually tighten cylinder head bolts in three steps and in sequence shown in Fig. 2, to 43 ft. lbs.
b. Install camshaft timing pulley and timing belt in original (marked) position as removed.
