Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Remove air cleaner, valve cover and distributor.
4. Disconnect accelerator cable from carburetor.
5. Disconnect emission control hoses from carburetor and intake manifold.
6. Disconnect cooling system hoses from intake manifold.
7. Disconnect wiring from carburetor and intake manifold.
8. Disconnect fuel lines from fuel pump.
9. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose from intake manifold.
10. Remove crank pulley, outside cover, timing cover and tensioner. Refer to TIMING BELT & COVER REPLACEMENT.
11. Remove A/C compressor, if equipped.
12. Disconnect oxygen sensor lead.
13. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold and second air valve.
14. Remove fuel pump.
15. Remove rocker shafts, rocker arms, springs and camshaft.
16. Disconnect engine side mounting at cylinder head.
17. Remove cylinder head bolts.
18. Remove cylinder head with carburetor, intake and exhaust manifolds.

19. Reverse procedure to install. Torque cylinder head bolts to specification sequentially according to pattern shown in Fig. 1.
