Timing Cover: Service and Repair


EXC. 16 VALVE ENGINE
No. 1 (Upper) Timing Belt Cover, Replace
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Loosen water pump pulley bolts.
3. Remove alternator drive belt.
4. Remove power steering pump drive belt, if equipped.
5. Remove water pump pulley.
6. Drain cooling system.
7. Disconnect upper radiator hose at outlet.
8. Disconnect all necessary vacuum lines.
9. Remove upper No. 1 timing cover attaching bolts.
10. Raise and support vehicle.
11. Remove lower cover attaching bolts.
12. Lower vehicle, then remove No. 1 timing cover.
13. Reverse procedure to install.
No. 2 (Lower) Timing Belt Cover, Replace
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove alternator belt.
3. Remove A/C drive belt, if equipped.
4. Raise and support vehicle.
5. Remove righthand under cover.
6. Remove flywheel cover.
7. Remove crankshaft pulley.
8. Remove No. 2 timing cover and gasket.
9. Reverse procedure to install.
No. 3 (Middle) Timing Belt Cover, Replace
1. Remove No. 1 timing belt cover as described previously.
2. Loosen A/C idler pulley mount nut and adjusting bolt, then remove A/C belt, if equipped.
3. Remove A/C idler pulley and adjusting bolt, if equipped.
4. Remove alternator and position aside.
5. Remove No. 3 timing belt cover and gasket.
6. Reverse procedure to install.
