SERVICE UPDATEBulletin No.: 12230
Date: September 25, 2012
Subject: 12230 Service Update for Inventory and Customer Vehicles Headliner Trim Panel Sagging at Rear Window Expires with Base Warranty
Models:
2013 Cadillac XTS
This service update includes vehicles in dealer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealership for any reason. This bulletin will expire at the end of the involved vehicle's New Vehicle Limited Warranty period.
Purpose
This bulletin provides a service procedure to inspect and, if necessary, secure the headliner fasteners to the headliner trim panel on certain 2013 model year Cadillac XTS vehicles. The headliner retaining magnet and/or clip in the rear roof area may separate from the headliner trim panel.
This service procedure should be completed as soon as possible on involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealer for any type of service during the New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage period.
Vehicles Involved
All involved vehicles are identified by VIN in the Global Warranty Management System - Investigate Vehicle History Application. Dealership technicians should always check this site to confirm vehicle involvement prior to beginning any required inspections and/or repairs. It is important to routinely use this tool to verify eligibility because not all similar vehicles may be involved regardless of description or option content.
Additionally, a list of involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory is available on the "Service Update Bulletin Information" link under the "Service" tab in GM GlobalConnect (US) or attached to the GlobalConnect message (Canada) used to release this bulletin. Customer vehicles that return for service, for any reason, and are still covered under the vehicle's base warranty should also be checked for vehicle eligibility.

Service Procedure
Headliner Inspection
1. Using your fingers or a hooked trim stick (with 90 degree bend), pull down on the rear edge of the headliner at the centerline of the vehicle.
Note
The headliner magnet will produce a "popping" noise when the magnet disengages and engages the rear header panel.
2. Pull down on the headliner until you hear the magnet disengage off the rear header panel.
3. Release the headliner. You should hear the magnet engage back on the rear header panel.
- If the magnet did engage back on the rear header panel, no further action is required.
- If the magnet did NOT engage back on the rear header panel, refer to Headliner Repair in this bulletin.
Headliner Repair
1. Remove the rear window assembly. Refer to Rear Window Replacement in SI.
2. Cover the interior and exterior of the vehicle as required to protect the body, seats and rear shelf areas of the vehicle.
3. Release the left and right outer rear headliner trim panel clips from the rear roof bow and lower the rear of the headliner trim panel to access the repair area.
4. Identify the failed retainer (s).
5. Using a permanent marker, mark the location of the retainer (s) being serviced on the headliner trim panel as shown.
6. Remove the old adhesive from the failed retainer (s).
7. Remove as much of the old adhesive as possible from the headliner trim panel. Use care not to damage the headliner trim panel foundation material.
8. Mix the gel epoxy per the manufacturer's instructions. (Use Super Glue Quick Set Gel Epoxy, P/N 15213. In Canada, use Lepage Gel Epoxy, P/N 1165246, or equivalent.)
9. Apply the mixed epoxy to the headliner trim panel as shown. Use alignment marks created in step 5 to locate the adhesive. Ensure there is full coverage.
10. Install the retainer(s) as shown using the alignment marks for the location. Ensure the adhesive squeezes through all of the holes in the base of the retainer.
11. Allow the adhesive to fully cure before reinstalling the headliner trim panel.
12. Reinstall the headliner trim panel by fully engaging the outer retaining clips and center mounted magnet retainer.
13. Remove the interior covers.
14. Reinstall the rear window assembly. Refer to Rear Window Replacement in SI.
