37. Second Clutch Assemble

- J 23080-A Second Clutch Piston Seal Installer
- J 23327 Clutch Spring Compressor





1. Install the second clutch piston inner (620) and outer (621) seals. The seal lips face toward the bottom of the piston.
2. Lubricate the seals with DEXRON(R)III automatic transmission fluid.





3. Install J23080-A into the second clutch drum (618).
4. Install the second clutch piston assembly (622) into J 23080-A.
5. Install J23080-A with the second clutch piston assembly into the second clutch drum (618).
6. Push the piston into place.
7. Remove J 23080-A.





8. Assemble the second clutch piston return springs (611) and spring seat (623) on the second clutch piston.





9. Install J 23327
10. Place the retaining ring over J23327
11. Compress the return springs using J23327 Do not let the spring seat catch in the ring groove.
12. Install the second clutch piston return spring seat retainer ring (613).
13. Remove J 23327





14. Install the second clutch cushion plate (625) into the second clutch drum (618).
15. Install the second clutch plates (626, 627) into the second clutch drum. Begin with a steel plate and alternate with the composite plate.
16. Align the internal splines of the second clutch plates.
17. Install the second clutch spacer (628). The wavy end faces toward the clutch plates.





18. Install the lower ring gear retainer ring (629).
19. Install the ring gear (630). The grooved edge faces up.
20. Install the upper ring gear retainer ring (629).
