Steering Column Jacket - Assemble

Assembly Procedure

- Tools Required
- J23653-91 Compressor Plate Adapter
- J23653-SIR Lock Plate Compressor

Important: If the steering column support assembly has been staked more than three times, replace the steering column support assembly.





1. Install the steering column housing assembly (1)onto the steering column housing support (2).





2. Place the tilt lever position lock shoes (3) into the dowel pins.
3. Rotate the head assembly until holes (2) for the pivot pins line up.





4. Install the pivot pins (1) into the hole in the steering column housing.
5. Bottom the pivot pins (1) against the steering column housing.





6. Using a hammer and a brass drift, stake (1) the pivot pins (2) at 3 equally spaced locations.
7. Note: If there is no surface suitable for restaking, the steering column housing (3) must be replaced.





8. Pull the tilt lever (7) on the steering column housing and tilt the column completely up.
9. Lubricate the tilt spring (6).
10. Install the tilt spring (6); refer to Tilt Spring-Assemble-Off Vehicle.
11. Install the lock housing (5); refer to Lock Housing Assembly-Assemble-Off Vehicle.
12. Install the inner race (4).
13. Install the inner race seat (3).
14. Install the upper bearing spring (2).
15. Install the spring retainer (1).





16. Install new retaining ring using J23653-91 and J23653-SIR.
17. To install the signal switch housing, refer to Turn Signal Switch Housing-Assemble-Off Vehicle.
