Starter Motor: Service and Repair
REMOVAL PROCEDURETOOLS REQUIRED
^ J 28467-A Universal Engine Support Fixture
^ J 28467-450 Engine Support Fixture Adapters
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Raise the vehicle and suitably support.
3. Remove the following starter motor lead components:
^ The terminal nuts (1, 2)
^ The washers
^ The battery cable terminal lead
^ The starter solenoid terminal lead
4. Remove the RH catalytic converter.
5. Remove the RH engine mount nuts (1).
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Remove the resonance chamber to throttle body ducts.
8. Install the J 28467-A with the J 28467-450 to the RH of the engine.
9. Raise the RH side of the engine about 38 mm (1.5 in).
10. Raise the vehicle.
11. Remove the engine mount (4) from the engine mount bracket and the front crossmember.
12. Remove the engine mount bracket bolts.
13. Reposition the bracket.
14. Remove the starter motor bolts (2, 3).
15. Remove the starter motor (1).
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the starter motor (1).
NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
2. Install the starter motor bolts (2, 3).
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 60 N.m (44 lb ft).
3. Position the engine mount bracket on the vehicle.
4. Install the engine mount bracket bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 40 N.m (30 lb ft).
5. Install the engine mount (4) to the engine mount bracket and the front crossmember.
6. Partially lower the vehicle.
7. Lower the engine:
^ Have an assistant guide the mount into place while lowering the engine.
^ Inspect that the engine mount locator tab (3) engages in the front crossmember slot.
8. Install the resonance chamber to throttle body ducts.
9. Raise the vehicle.
10. Install the RH engine mount nuts (1, 2).
Tighten
^ Tighten the upper nut to 40 N.m (30 lb ft).
^ Tighten the lower nut to 55 N.m (41 lb ft).
11. Install the RH catalytic converter.
12. Install the following starter motor lead components:
^ The battery cable terminal lead
^ The starter solenoid terminal lead
^ The washers
^ The terminal nuts (1, 2)
Tighten
^ Tighten the battery cable terminal nut to 13 N.m (115 lb in).
^ Tighten the starter solenoid terminal nut to 4 N.m (35 lb in).
13. Lower the vehicle.
14. Connect the battery negative cable.
