Oil Cooler: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure





1. Remove the intake plenum. Refer to Intake Plenum Replacement.
2. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement.
3. Disconnect the following electrical connectors from the water crossover:
^ The engine coolant temperature sender (2)
^ The engine coolant temperature sensor (4)





4. Remove the water crossover bolts and upper seals (2).
5. Remove the water crossover and lower seals (2).





6. Loosen the upper heat shield bolts on the LH side of the exhaust manifold.





7. Remove the oil feed line from the engine oil cooler.
8. Remove the oil return line from the engine oil cooler.





9. Note the positioning of the four seals.
10. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
11. Remove the left side catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement.
12. Remove the oil filter cartridge housing from the engine block.





13. Remove the crank position sensor (CKP) bolt.
14. Remove the CKP sensor (1).





15. Remove the oil feed line from the engine block.
16. Remove the oil return line from the engine block.
17. Lower the vehicle.





18. Position the oil feed and return lines out of the way and secure with mechanic wire.
19. Remove the engine oil cooler inlet and outlet nuts (1).
20. Remove the engine oil cooler cover bolts (2).





21. Remove the engine oil cooler cover.
22. Remove the engine oil cooler.
23. Clean all sealing surfaces.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the engine oil cooler.
2. Apply a 2 mm (0.08 inch) bead of RTV silicone sealant, GM P/N 12346240, in the groove around the engine oil cooler cover.
3. Install the engine oil cooler cover.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





4. Install the engine oil cooler cover bolts (2).
Tighten the engine oil cooler cover bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft.lbs.).
5. Install the engine oil cooler inlet and outlet nuts (1).
Tighten the engine oil cooler inlet and outlet nuts to 20 Nm (15 ft.lbs.).
6. Reposition the oil feed and return lines.





7. Raise and support the vehicle.
8. Install the oil feed line to the engine block.
Tighten the oil feed line to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
9. Install the return line to the engine block.
Tighten the return line to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).





10. Install the CKP sensor (1).
11. Install the CKP sensor bolt.
Tighten the CKP sensor bolt to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.).
12. Install the oil filter cartridge housing to the engine block.
Tighten the oil filter cartridge housing to 15 Nm (11 ft.lbs.).
13. Install the left side catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement.
14. Lower the vehicle.





15. Install the oil feed and install the return lines to the engine oil cooler.
Use four new seals.
Tighten the oil feed and return lines to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
16. Coat the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts with high temperature nickel anti-seize lubricant, GM P/N 12371386 or equivalent.
17. Install the upper heat shield bolts on the left side of the exhaust manifold.
Tighten the heat shield bolts to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.).





18. Install the water crossover:
^ Position the crossover.
^ Slide the upper seals (2) onto the bolts.
^ Insert the bolts (1) into the crossover.
^ Slide the lower seals (2) under the crossover and onto the bolts.
Tighten the bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
19. Connect the electrical connectors at the following locations:
^ The engine coolant temperature sensor (4)
^ The engine coolant temperature sender (2)
20. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement.
21. Install the intake plenum. Refer to Intake Plenum Replacement.
22. Check and fill the engine oil as necessary. Refer to Capacities - Approximate Fluid.
