Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

Caution: An electric fan under the hood can start up even when the engine is not running and can injure you. Keep hands, clothing and tools away from any underhood electric fan.





1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure.
2. Remove the secondary air cut-off bracket:
- Remove the bracket bolts.
- Disconnect the bracket from the fan housing.
3. Remove the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Powertrain Management.
4. Remove the upper radiator covers:
- Release the self-locking tabs.
- Remove the cover screws.
- Remove the covers.
5. Disconnect the electrical connectors at the following locations:
- The primary fan motor
- The primary fan cooling switch (at the upper LH of the radiator)





6. Remove the auxiliary water pump from the primary fan housing by removing the two clips.
7. Place a catch basin under the fittings and remove the upper transmission oil cooler fitting and loosen the lower transmission oil cooler pipe fittings.





8. Remove the fan housing bolts and remove the fan housing from the vehicle,
9. Snug the lower fitting to minimize fluid loss while the fan housing is removed from the vehicle.





10. Remove the fan motor nuts (1).
11. Remove the fan motor from the fan shroud.





12. Remove the fan blade retainer clip (1).
13. Remove the fan blade from the fan motor.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the fan blade to the fan motor.
2. Install the fan blade retainer clip (1).





3. Install the fan motor to the fan shroud.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Install the fan motor nuts (1).
Tighten the fan motor nuts to 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.).





5. Loosen the lower transmission oil cooler pipe fitting to install the fan housing to the vehicle.
6. Install the fan shroud bolts (1).
Tighten the fan shroud bolts to 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.).
7. Install the upper transmission oil cooler pipe fitting and seals.
Tighten the upper and lower fittings to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).





8. Install the auxiliary water pump to the primary fan housing by inserting the two clips.





9. Connect the electrical connectors at the following locations:
- The primary cooling fan
- The primary cooling fan switch
10. Install the upper radiator covers:
- Position the covers.
- Insert the self-locking tabs.
- Install the screws until fully seat and not stripped.
11. Install the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Powertrain Management.
12. Install the secondary AIR cut-off valve bracket:
- Position the AIR cut-off valve bracket.
- Install the AIR cut-off valve bracket bolts.
Tighten the AIR cut-off valve bolts to 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.).
13. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure.
