Parking Brake Cable: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

Notice: Handling the parking brake cables during service requires extra care. Damage to the nylon coating reduces the corrosion protection. If the damage area passes through the nylon coating, increased parking brake effort could result. Avoid contacting the protective coating with sharp-edge tools or the sharp surfaces of the vehicle underbody.

1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the rear exhaust section.
3. Remove the exhaust heat shields.
4. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - Two Piece in Transmission and Drivetrain.
5. Measure the length of the exposed parking brake lever shaft from the brake shoe adjusting nut.
6. Record the measurement.

Important: Clean and lubricate the exposed threads (1) before attempting to turn the brake shoe adjusting nut (2).





7. Remove the brake shoe adjusting nut (1) from the parking brake lever shaft (2).
8. Remove the parking brake cable guide from the lever shaft.
9. Remove the parking brake cables from the parking brake cable guide.





10. Remove the parking brake cable return spring (2) from the parking brake lever (3) and backing plate.
11. Remove the parking brake cable (1) from the parking brake lever (3).





12. Remove the parking brake cable (2) from the parking brake cable guides (1).
13. Remove the parking brake cable.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the parking brake cable (2) to the parking brake cable guides (1).





2. Install the parking brake cable (1) to the parking brake lever (3).
3. Install the parking brake cable return spring (2) to the parking brake lever (3) and backing plate.
4. Install the parking brake cables (2) to the parking brake cable guides (1).





5. Install the parking brake cable adjusting link boot (1) onto the parking brake lever shaft (2).
6. Install the parking brake cable guide onto the parking brake lever shaft.





7. Install the brake shoe adjusting nut (1) onto the parking brake lever shaft (2).
8. Adjust the brake shoe adjusting nut (1) to the recorded measurement in Step 5 of the Removal Procedure.
9. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - Two Piece in Transmission and Drivetrain.
10. Test the parking brake operation. Refer to Park Brake Shoe Adjustment.
11. Install the exhaust heat shields.
12. Install the rear exhaust section
13. Lower the vehicle.
