Brake Caliper Replacement - Front
Removal Procedure1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the tire and the wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
Important: Brake fluid in the caliper is subject to contamination by heat. Do not force the contaminated fluid back through the brake system.
3. Open the bleeder screw.
4. Attach a tube over the bleeder screw to catch the brake fluid in a container.
5. Compress the piston into caliper housing bore to provide clearance between linings and rotor.
6. Remove the front brake hose bolt (2).
7. Remove the front brake hose (1).
8. Remove the front brake hose seals (3).
9. Discard the bolt and the seals.
10. Remove the caliper guide pin bolts (discard bolts).
11. Remove the caliper from the caliper bracket.
12. Inspect the brake pads for uneven wear and maximum taper of 0.15 mm (0.006 inches). Replace the brake pads if the pads are tapered beyond specification.
13. If replacing the brake pads:
13.1. Disconnect the brake pad wear sensor electrical connector.
13.2. Disconnect the brake pad wear sensor harness retainers from the front suspension strut.
Important: Do not attempt to pry or pull the brake pad wear sensor out of the brake pad. The brake pad wear sensor must be pushed out of the brake pad.
13.3. Remove the inner brake pad from the caliper bracket with the brake pad wear sensor.
13.4. Remove the brake pads (1) from the caliper bracket (2).
13.5. Remove the brake pad wear sensor. Use a small punch to push the sensor through the back side of the brake pad.
Installation Procedure
1. Ensure the front brake caliper bracket mounting surfaces (1) are clean and lubricated.
2. If replacing the brake pads:
2.1. Install the brake pad wear sensor to the inner brake pad.
2.2. Connect the brake pad wear sensor harness and retainers to the front suspension strut.
2.3. Connect the brake pad wear sensor electrical connector.
3. Install the brake pads (1) into caliper bracket (2), if removed.
4. Install the caliper (1).
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
5. Install new guide pin bolts.
^ Tighten caliper guide pin bolts to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
6. Install the front brake hose.
7. Install new front brake hose seals.
8. Install a new front brake hose bolt.
^ Tighten the front brake hose bolt to 40 Nm (30 lb ft).
9. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding.
10. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
11. Lower the vehicle.
Important: New braking surfaces must be broken in or burnished after brake pads are installed and/or after rotors are refinished. Avoid overheating the brakes.
12. Make 20 stops from 48 km/h (30 mph) using medium to firm brake pedal pressure to burnish the brake rotors.
