Transmission Replacement
Removal Procedure^ Tools Required
- J-28467-B Universal Engine Support Fixture
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable assembly from the battery negative terminal.
2. Remove the headlamp housing upper filler panel.
3. Remove the diagonal brace.
4. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
5. Remove the shift control cable and the bracket at the transmission.
6. Remove the torque struts.
7. Remove the oil cooler lines at the cooler and the oil sending line at the transmission.
8. Remove the two upper bell housing bolts.
9. Remove the power steering return hose at the auxiliary cooler.
10. Install plugs in the cooler and the return hose to prevent fluid leakage or contamination.
Important: Load the support fixture by tightening the wing nuts several turns in order to take the weight of the powertrain off of the mounts and the frame.
11. Install the J 28467-a.
12. Raise the left side of the powertrain (the transmission side) 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) above the powertrain resting position with the adjusting screws.
13. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
14. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
15. Remove both front tires and wheels.
16. Remove both front wheel opening splash shields.
17. Remove both front suspension position sensors from the lower control arms and position out of the way.
18. Remove both stabilizer links from the struts. Service and Repair
19. Remove both tie rod cotter pins and nuts and separate both tie rods from the steering knuckles. Service and Repair
20. Remove both lower ball joint cotter pins and nuts. Separate both ball joints from the struts. Service and Repair
21. Remove both drive axles. Service and Repair
22. Remove the fuel filter bracket from the frame.
23. Remove the ABS modulator from the bracket and the support.
24. Remove the engine oil pan to transmission bracket.
25. Remove the torque converter cover. Service and Repair
Important: Mark the flywheel to converter position so that they can be assembled in the same position.
26. Remove the flywheel to converter bolts.
27. Remove the powertrain mount nuts from the frame.
28. Remove the clamp bolt (Rotate the steering intermediate shaft so that the steering gear stub shaft clamp bolt is accessible from the left wheel opening).
Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear or to the intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control, which could result in an accident and possible personal injury.
Notice: Do not rotate the steering wheel or move the position of the steering gear once the intermediate shaft is disconnected. This will uncenter the Inflatable Restraint coil in the steering column. If the Inflatable Restraint coil becomes uncentered, it may be damaged during vehicle operation.
29. Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Service and Repair
30. Remove the electrical harness and connector from the front of the frame.
31. Support the rear of frame with an adjustable jack stand.
32. Remove the four rear frame bolts.
33. Lower the jack stand a few inches to gain access to the power steering gear heat shield and the return line fitting.
34. Remove the power steering gear heat shield and the power steering return line at the gear. Install plugs in the steering gear and pressure line in order to prevent fluid leakage or contamination. Service and Repair
35. Remove the power steering electrical connector.
36. Raise the jack stand and reinstall one rear frame bolt on each side finger tight in order to support the frame.
37. Remove the jack stand.
38. Remove the support frame.
39. Remove the six frame mount bolts.
40. Remove the lower frame and/or raise the vehicle with the steering gear attached.
41. Remove the following electrical connectors:
^ Three transmission connectors
^ VSS connector
42. Remove the fuel line bundle from the transmission.
43. Remove the left transmission mount and bracket from the transmission.
44. Remove the right transmission bracket, the mount, and the brace.
45. Remove the engine to transmission heat shield and the bracket.
46. Remove the engine to transmission bolts.
47. Lower the transmission.
48. Remove the manual shaft linkage and the park/neutral position switch.
49. Remove the vehicle speed sensor. Service and Repair
50. Remove the oil return pipe.
Installation Procedure

- J 35551 Ball Stud Nut Wrench
- J 8763-02 Transmission Holding Fixture
1.Install the J 8763-02.
2. Install the oil return pipe.
3. Install the vehicle Speed Sensor.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
4. Install the park/neutral position switch and the manual shaft linkage.
4.1. Tighten the park/neutral position switch bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
4.2. Tighten the manual shaft nut to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
5. Raise the transmission on the J 8763-02
6. Install the engine to transmission bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
7. Install the engine to transmission bracket and heat shield.
^ Tighten the bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
8. Remove the J 8763-02.
9. Install the right transmission bracket, mount, and brace.
^ Tighten the bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
10. Install the left transmission bracket and mount to the transmission.
^ Tighten the bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
11. Install the fuel line bundle to the transmission.
12. Install the following electrical connectors:
^ The transmission connectors.
^ The VSS connector.
^ The ground.
^ The transmission harness in order to Install the transmission clip.
13. Raise the frame and/or lower the vehicle while locating the engine and transmission mount studs into the frame, harnesses at the frame, and the frame mount bolt holes to the underbody.
14. Install two front and two rear frame bolts finger tight in order to support the frame.
15. Remove the frame support fixture.
16. Support the rear of the frame with an adjustable jack stand.
17. Remove two rear frame bolts.
18. Lower the jack stand a few inches in order to gain access to the power steering gear.
19. Install the power steering pressure hose at the steering gear.
^ Tighten the fitting to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
20. Install the power steering gear electrical connector and power steering gear heat shield:
^ The ground.
^ The transmission harness to the transmission clip.
21. Raise the jack stand.
22. Install the six frame mount bolts in the following order:
22.1. Left side #2 mount bolt into the body.
22.2. Left side #1 mount bolt into the body.
22.3. The remaining frame mount bolts.
23. Install the electrical & harness to the front of the frame.
Notice: Do not rotate the steering wheel or move the position of the steering gear once the intermediate shaft is disconnected. This will uncenter the Inflatable Restraint coil in the steering column. If the Inflatable Restraint coil becomes uncentered, it may be damaged during vehicle operation.
24. Install the steering intermediate shaft to the steering gear and install the clamp bolt.
^ Tighten the bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
25. Install the left and right transmission mount nuts and the right engine mount nuts at the frame.
^ Tighten the nuts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
26. Install the fuel filter bracket to the frame.
Important: Line up the flywheel and converter using the marks you made at disassembly.
27. Install the flywheel to converter bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
28. Install both tie rods.
29. Install torque converter cover.
30. Install the engine oil pan to transmission bracket.
^ Tighten the bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
31. Install the ABS modulator to the bracket.
32. Install both drive axles into the transmission.
33. Install both lower ball joint cotter pins and nuts.
34. Install both tie rods into the steering knuckles and both tie rod nuts and cotter pins.
35. Install both stabilizer links to struts.
36. Install both front suspension position sensors to the lower control arms.
37. Install both front wheel opening splash shields.
38. Install both front tire and wheel assemblies.
39. Lower the vehicle.
40. Remove the J 28467-B Universal Engine Support Fixture.
41. Install the power steering hose at the auxiliary cooler.
42. Install the upper bell housing bolts.
43. Perform the oil cooler flushing procedure.
44. Install the transmission cooler pipe fittings at the transmission. Install the fittings finger tight.
^ Tighten the cooler pipe fittings at transmission to 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.).
45. Install the oil sending pipe to the transmission.
46. Install the torque struts.
47. Adjust the park/neutral position switch. Service and Repair
48. Install the range control cable and bracket at the transmission.
^ Tighten the bracket bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
49. Adjust the shift control cable.
50. Install the air cleaner assembly.
51. Install the headlamp housing upper filler panel.
52. Install the diagonal brace.
53. Connect the battery negative cable assembly to the battery negative terminal.
^ Tighten the terminal bolt to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.).
54. Bleed the power steering system.
55. Add DEXRON III transmission fluid as required. Refer to Specifications.
56. Check the front suspension alignment, adjust the toe as necessary.
57. Reset the transmission adapts.
58. Reset the transmission oil life indicator.
